I am a service manager for a small used car dealer in pa.our Owner has just bought a 2003 discovery SE (47,000 miles) for his own use.I have no service records to work with and he wants it maintained by us.I have never worked on this type of vehicle, we sell fords and chevys just basic stuff.Where would you start ,what work would you do first besides the basics(oil change, brakes etc) the truck runs good no problems that I can see and I want it staying that way.Can some one help with a list of preventive maintenance items that should be done now.(also what scanner would you recommend for when a problem does arise)

Call a Rover dealer, ask the service manager to run it for a radio codes, open recalls, verify if Rover did the 30 K and also see if this trucks vin falls within a TSB for a bad oil pump/engine failure issue. If it is within the vin, make sure the dealer knows he may have a problem.
As for current service, if the 30K was done then a LOF, air filter and serpentine belty along with your normal inspection. Good luck, Mike |

1st.this forum is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank You for your help.
my owner called there are 2 recalls 1 for a valve control module the other for a reflash of software. He was told they couldn't ck for service work performed to date. As for TSB for bad oil pump /engine failure,our vin# is salty16443a790576 on from some checking that I did on line the problem could be with vin# range 3a771801 thru 3a808362 if this is true we could have a problem,any advise? he has an appointment for monday for the 2 recalls. |

ok I need some advise(this may be long sorry),,,,,, I am the owner of this 2003 discovery that has from what I undersatnd the potential to give me alot of problems because of the oil pump issue.I purcahsed this vehicle because in another life when times where good I had the pleasure over a period of alot of years(I am Old) of leasing 3 landrovers and 2 discovery pre 1999.Each was driven to over 100,000 miles with never having a problem beyond regular maintance an some minor stuff covered by warranty. 2 bmw x5's later when I decided no more car payments this was the logical choice.I should have done more research prior to buying but we all make errors in jugdement,besides I didn't discover this forum untill after we made to purchase.The truck is at the dealer it cost me $3,500 (och!)to replace the ABS module which was causing the 3 amigos, have a 45,000 mile service, serpintine belt changed,service engine soon light cleared by replacing a purge valve and some other minor things I wanted done, lights rattles and such.sdo now all in I have about $13,500 invested in this truck including Running boards,brush guard,rear step new mats etc.I would be fine with this if it weren't for the oil pump/engine failure issue which I have read so much about here.To sell now would mean a big loss,if the engine goes another big loss.after market warranty big expense.I what to relax about this but all the negative post have me obsessed to fine a solution.i am leaning towards the warranty.so I am posting this for any and all comments.

ok thats one opinion,which I agree with.Anybody have an opinion on extened service agreements/warranty.I received a quote from GENUINE WARRANTY SOLUTIONS for $3500 3 yrs unlimited milage $200 deductable.Bumber to bumber.(so they say)

I would personally put the $3500 in the bank for the 'repair fund'... you can buy a 1999/2000 D2 for $3500 these days... unless your engine goes, not much is going to justify the $200 deductible... and even then, you can probably get a used engine in good shape for less.

Great that's just what my younger son(25) told me,and I thought I was the smart one in the family.......By the way I picked up the truck from the dealer today runs great no lights.And now I remember why I bought this truck, my X5s where good trucks fast, unbelievable handling and reliable yet everyone has one these days it's easy to follow the crowd,there is something different in the discovery.
If anyone is interested I asked the service manager (a 15 year land rover veteran at this dealer)about the oil pump TSB and he said not to be to concerned,he did a few engines from the oil pump failure in 2003 and 2004 but most failed with low milage. He hasn't had one in a long time.Who knows maybe I will luck out,I intend to keep up with the required service and enjoy. Thanks for all the responses to my posts. |
