ONLY way tell if you need machine work done on the heads is to have them pulled off and looked at. I had to change out my head gaskets on my 97 Disco a few years back and had something 115k on the engine when I did them. I didn't have to do any machine work to the heads at all. Just had to change out the gaskets. Average price around here to have rover head gasket jobs done are around $1,500-$1,800 without any machine work (have to add extra if machining needs to be done). Those prices are at indy shops, the dealership will change much more. You will not know if you need more then just the gaskets until you/they rip into the engine. I would say that you will more then likely only need to have the gaskets done if you didn't overheat it.

What should I be looking for with this job? Should they replace all gaskets like in this AB gasket kit? HEAD GASKET SET COMPOSITE V8 BOSCH MOTORS | Land Rover Engine Parts at RoverParts.com

I really think I'm going to get taken one way or the other. If I pay 2,450 the job is done right but I have to eat oddles and noodles for 6 months, or I pay 1,200 and get a half ass job. I'm In need of some direction here guys. The 1,200 job included a resurface for another $100.00.
