Ok, in the "sometimes you just gotta ask department":
I've read in various places about how the '04 Disco is the best of the Discoveries. (A couple of site, and DAP-INC's newsletter...) And so I want to know, why? My friend's got one, should I be manuvering to get it once he's done with it (he doesn't do any off-roading and he baby's it). Thanks, Joey |

For all practical purposes, the only differences between the '03 and the '04 are value. They are equally good, and, in my opinion, better than the LR3 which followed. The newer LR3s are nicecer than the first, but as I said, in my mind, not as well built as the last of the D2s.

Well, I went trough that same brain storming when shopping for my Disco. The 2004 has the newer headlights, the 4.6 and are probably still under warranty. I found a 2000 with as low mileage as most 2004 that were on the market a year ago, and to me paying twice the price for the above mentionned didn't justify. For a grand I can have those headlights if I want.....but do I ??? Gas prices are high enough for me to choose the smaller engine too.

cdl, 4.6L, a better t/c system. on the 03/04s in general they got a small facelift from the older D2s...different headlights, bumper, and rear taillights. the 04s hold their value...alot of them are still under factory warranty too. I have my factory warranty on my 2004 for another 2 more years (i also have an extended warranty taking it to 4 years now).

For people who want to wheel, the 04 is by far the best of the D2's because of the modifications to the engine, tranny, t/case and the addition of the CDL with it's up graded shifter linkage.
03's, all though they look the same are not even close to the 04 in quality, they also have been known to hvae lots of oil pressure/pump/ engine issues that took some time to fix, many people lost their 03 engines due to the oil pump issues of the early production 4.6 engines. Mike |

If you take a look at the lights on the 04, they are a bit more "retro" in a nod to the old series wagons, round headlight with dual round markers on the sides. They provide a lot better lighting than the old D1 and 2 headlights as well, other than that, the CDL, the ride, the stability, even lifted, is way ahead of the game. the 4.6 is a huge improvement over the 4.0, similar to comparing a Series II to a 4.0 Range Rover(Seriously..). Best bet, go drive one, take it "off road" a little, and on road. you will be sold.

agreed, the LR3 is a hell of an offroading machine, but pricey. And its hard to justify spending $50k for a vehicle and then another $10k in mods and then taking it out and beating the hell out of it.... so, wait a few years... till the Disco4 comes out and then the Disco3s will be the last of the "real discos"... sheesh and speaking of which... has anyone been out to rally in the 07 RR? Its AWESOME!!

I tried to buy a demo 04 off a Denver dealer in 2004. Right color , low miles
(6K) and everything. The re-intro of the CDL is what sold me. But.....not enough coin and the payment was pretty outrageous.....so I keep shopping. Found a low mile 01 w/ early tranny/transfer w/ the CDL nub. So for now I reach up under to pull my "redneck" linkage. I happy for now. Would like an 04 sometime. ![]() |
