Default While I'm In There

While I am changing plugs, wires, intake gasket, and valve cover gaskets, is there any thing else I should do in there? I shouldn't have to mess with valve lash, but old habits creep into the back of my mind.

My indie mechanic told me when he changed the coil packs, he only put the top bolts back onto the coil bracket. He'd say I would thank him for it. I am glad he did.

Also, what's the best way to scrape the valve cover gasket area clean? My gasket scraper scrapes up metal flakes when I try to use it. Would a scotch brite pad work?

scotch brite,

buy yourself some aviator sealant from napa and stick some right stuff in the corners of the intake gasket by the head,

put the aviator sealant around the valve cover gaskets and around the water ports on both sides of the intake gasket.

you can put all four bolts back on but its easier to leave the bottom two loose.

that way it lines up perfectly.

Thanks for the advice! Which ones are the water ports? Are those the two raised bosses?

Wow, this is one thankless job. Hopefully I don't have to do it again anytime soon. Plugs were worn, no oil fouling or anything weird.

I do have one more task that will be worse than this. The intake gasket on a 2000 Chevy Venture. Pure joy.

Water ports are all four on the outsides. the intakes are in the middle.

Crap,

Just fired it up and it stumbles on start up and misses. I went over wire configuration a million times. The plug ends of the Magnecors seemed a little loose, but is that normal?

I don't want to rip it apart again...

What caused you to pull the intake manifold off in the first place?

Double Crap,

Wires were on wrong. Need to check that a million and one times.

But I was able to correct it in two hours. Much faster the second time.

Time for a beer...

Valve cover gasket replacement and wires. I can only get a couple of the wires off with my fat fingers if I don't pull the intake manifold off.
