Default White Smoke

I have a 99 Discovery II with 68k miles. I started to notive that it is blowing white smoke. I think a head gasket blew. Any ideas. Can this be repaired at home?

Yes, it sounds like you lost your head gaskets.
How mechanical are you, have you ever pulled a set of heads before.
In the mean time, don't drive it AT ALL or you could toast the block.

Mike:

Is there anything one can do from a maint. perspective to delay or prevent the head gasket issue? I didn't think there was, but I figured I'd check.

Depends where the head gaskets are leaking. Where are your's leaking from? Both of mine have been leaking for over a year, coolant off the front of both heads, but it is so slight, about a quart every 2 weeks, that I haven't worried about it. As long as you are not inner mixing fluids or pumping coolant out the tail pipes, you can stretch it out.
Don't let the engine over heat, don't you any of the stop leak products and go from there.

Mike:

Mine aren't leaking at all. If you remember, I'm the guy who had the head gasket problem in my '01, had it repaired...and then had the car blow up! Anyway, I just got an '04 and was curious if there was really anything that could be done to prevent the head gasket issue from occurring. It doesn't sound like that's the case, but you're the expert!

FYI, I did tell the dealer that I was taking into account a head gasket repair as part of negotiating the price...he said the head gaskets aren't generally a problem among Discos....riiight ;-)
