Default Wine

Anyone can pinpoint the wine? i have a serious whine noise, my rover always had a whine, but it is getting worse and louder. my feeling is it is the alternator going, it seems to be coming from that area. Can I just re Build it, they are like 600 bucks new????

Are you sure it's the alternator? Have you checked your idler pully? Mine went south and made a very distictive whine.

Rick, Have you put a long screw driver on the alternator and listened to it? I agree with 02disco2 could be a pulley or tensioner, they are know for that to happen.
Yes they can be rebuilt if you know a good electrical shop, had mine done about 3 years ago and it cost about $130 for new bearings and brushes.

I have a pulley that like to whine but it doesn't bother me enough to have me fix it yet. I'm sure it will at some point though. I doubt its your alternator though.

John,
Rover had a recall on one of the 99 pulleys, they replaced mine. If they fail, you may have a new vent in the hood, don't wait on replacing them, they are plastic.

They aren't 600 anymore- Denso is making them now under license so they are OEM spec but Densos are much cheaper than the early replacement ones. Try for a free one if the dealer goes for it, though. Second choice would be custom rebuild from a HIGH END rebuild shop, third would be a new Denso or Marelli, fourth would be a cheap Chinese one and just change it every year.
