Default Which years and models have an engine that is a direct fit for my '01?

I bought the truck figuring I would re-build the engine. (persistent knock) Now I'm hooked on it, and it is my daily driver. What with used engines being ballpark 2K, and new ones 5, I figure perhaps my best route is to pick up a donor vehicle, and rebuild that engine myself for a quick direct swap when finished.
So, which trucks have a direct fit replacement for my Bosch managed 4.0?

Thanks for your time and expertise.

Nick

Depends on if your have SAI or not, but 99-04 D2 will work, 03 and 04 being a bigger engine and mid 99-02 P38 range rover will work, with the HSE version also having the bigger 4.6L engine. But any of those will drop right in, assuming you match whether you have SAI or not, or work around it.

Thanks for the quick reply. No SAI. Forgive my not searching, but I've wondered even before your response, just exactly what is a "P38"? I'm guessing it is not a WWII vintage fighter plane.

If you are looking for something to build, then just consider a good 99 thru 04 4.0 or 4.6 short block, build it and when needed just redo your current heads and you are set to go.

p38 is the 2nd generation range rover, came out in 1995. In 1999 they added the bosch style fuel system that the D2 has.

Does that mean I can take the block out of 99 DI Gems engine and put all of my DII Bosch systems on it and it will be good?
