Default You know that annoying ticking sound that you can't just find?

I could never tell where this noise was coming from when my 2000 DII was in park....Everything looked normal.

Well, mine was the rear axle U-joint, it blew out on the beltline last nite.
Looks like I'll need a new drive shaft as well, it's really banged up. Ugh

Keep an eye on those U-joints people...

Check your transfer case and transmission as well.. when the driveshafts blow, they like to take a lot of things with them..

Bottom line, If your D2 has over 50k miles on, replace front driveshaft ujoints immediately. It's a disaster waiting to happen.

Thanks...The driveshaft was still sitting in the union itself, but you can see where the joints wore out and it was getting banged up by the transmission still turning the front drive. Luckily it hadn't fallen on the ground or anything.

It's at the dealer now, they'll go over everything. I'm hoping to get some of it covered under the drivetrain warranty, since they told me they'd done the 60K service when I bought it...I'm at 68K now. I think they should have seen some wear at 60K?

I don't believe they check it for wear... The u-joints on it are a 'sealed for life' unit.. they 'dont require grease' .. but as you learned... they fact that the AC drain holes drip on it constantly and that its next to the hot cats, they dry out after about 50-60k miles then explode. LR still hasn't recognized/recalled the problem though. They'll probably give you a new regular old driveshaft... what you should do is get the ujoints rebuilt with greaseable ones, then every oil change you do, make sure that they are greased.

Thanks for the advice...I can handle that.

you can get the drive train with zurc (sp) fittings so you can grease gun the every oil change.
