I just got off the phone with my mechanic and he states that I need front and rear brakes and rotors. He said that the wear is below 5% on both the front and rear and that the rotors also need to be replaced at this time.
I currently have 28K miles on the vehicle!
Since I was recently laid off from my job, I am unable to incur the expense of replacing both the front and rear brakes and rotors.
Will I cause any significant damage to my vehicle, other than the possible reverburations and early tire wear if I was to only replace the brake pads alone to buy me a little bit of time until I can afford the entire job!
see my post a few below yours... but I just went through the same thing. 24K miles and service said I needed a full brake/rotor job... same 5% business. I couldn't believe it since I had purchased it a year prior certified with 16K miles and have since only out 9K miles on it... So I took it to an independent guy I trust who confirmed that all pads needed replacing, but only the front rotors were in need of replacement. Backs were fine. Got the parts from British Pacific and had him do it at half the cost the dealer quoted me.
But... at 28K miles it is possible that it is in need of the whole-enchilada brake job. If you search through the forums you will find that these vehicles tend to eat brakes like they are tasty salted buttery popcorn.
At 25K miles, the stock tires were already toast... so I sold a kidney and my Rover is back in fighting shape...
Ha, yes you correct about the eating of brakes! I am slowly realizing that the screaming deal that I got for the vehicle is quickly going to be made up in exorbitant maintenance costs! Guess I should have gotten a Honda ! Thanks for the useful info, I appreciate it!
