Default Gas Fumes

Has anyone here experienced their LR3 emitting strong gas fumes while hot? This has happened on my '05 SE, and now on my '08 HSE.

On really hot days here (105 and up) if I have 1/2 a tank or more, the rig will reek of gasoline - especially after a freeway run. This has happened at least a dozen times. It's so bad that I've parked it outside at night for fear that the house water heater might ignite the fumes.

LR Las Vegas fixed the '05 after a two tries. I took the '08 in a couple of weeks ago and, because they couldn't "recreate" the gas fuming, didn't do anything to it. Of course it didn't do it, because they insist that I bring it in with a 1/4 tank or less, and it only happens above 1/2!

I dropped it off again yesterday and told them to pull the records for the '05 and do whatever they did on that one to the '08. Their response was that in this economy they aren't willing to throw parts at it until the problem goes away. So, they are going to fill it up and drive it for a few days to see if it will do it. Naturally, the temp.s aren't supposed to hit 105 now, so I doubt if it will start fuming for them.

Am I wrong to insist that they fix what I consider a very dangerous condition? Has anyone else gone through this, and what was done to correct it?

Sorry, but I don't know what CEL is. There are no error codes or lights, and no visible fluid leaks. Everything seems to be running fine, it just stinks!

I thought that's all LR techs ever do!

For sure demand they fix it, the economy is not your problem, they must honor the warranty. Or perhaps suggest you will be filing a safety complaint Safercar.gov

There was a fuel tank recall for 05-06 where the wrong spec breather hose was put on some. I don't think it covers 08 but the symptoms sound similar.

So get this - the dealer has had my rig for four days now, with the temp.s anywhere from 105 to 110 outside. They have not been able to re-create the incident, even after they filled the tank and drove it on the freeway. Oddly enough, this is the exact scenario that it happens for me.

The service gal told me that she has three other customers with the same complaint and, according to Rover, "some" venting of gas is normal and to be expected during hot weather. So, even if it does start venting, there's probably nothing they could do about it.

Supposedly they can't do whatever they did to the '05 on this one because, according to her, the gas tank / fuel system was redesigned for '08.

I just filed a complaint with safercar.gov and will be contacting Land Rover NA in the morning.
