The 2.7 TdV6 is the result of a joint Ford-Peugeot project (Peugeot make very good diesels and have quite a side-line building/selling them to other companies, especially to India and China).

It's the same engine fitted to the Jaguar S-type diesel. The Jag version has twin turbos (one per bank), whilst the Landy version has one big turbo set up for low-speed torque (the result being more torque at a lower speed than the Td5). It also has more fuel/air filters, better seals for wading and a different oil sump to supply oil when the engine's at crazy angles.

The 4.4 V8 petrol is a long-stroke version of the Jaguar 4.2 V8 used in the XK8 and the XJS (the 4.2 engine with a supercharger is used in the Jag XK5, XJR and Land Rover are fitting it to the Range Rover Sport and the 2006 Range Rover).

So, the diesel is Ford/Peugeot designed and first launched in a Jaguar. The V8 was developed by Jaguar with Ford money

Yes it is. Land Rover has been owned by many people over the years:

1948-1974- Land Rover wasn't a company, it was a brand of car built by the Rover Motor Co.

1974- Rover became part of the British Leyland group (owned by the British Government and included nearly every British car company). British Leyland went through several name changes over the years (BL Car, BL Ltd., Austin-Rover, The Rover Group and now MG-Rover).

1979- Land Rover became a seperate company within British Leyland instead of being owned by Rover.

1994- Land Rover (and Rover) were sold to BMW.

2000- Rover was sold off to a private company, Land Rover was split off and sold to Ford.

The British motor industry has a long, complicated and generally depressing history
