Can someone tell me if the tow hitch is an 'extra'? I bought a bike rack, went to attach it, tried to locate the Tow hitch: according to the manual its in the compartment at the back on the left (7 seater SE) but there's nothing in there.
As a side note I had a look under the car to see if it might be there for some reason: at the back of the car on each side there are 2 great big dumbell weights hanging over the subframe. What the hell are those for? I can't believe they make enough of a difference to the handling or balance in the great grand scheme of things? Its not as if it doesn't weigh enough already. Is that a special present to improve the gas mileage, sponsored by Exxon? Last edited by clausy : 06-22-2008 at 01:38 PM. |

Yes, it's an accessory you have to purchase, and a very expensive one at that for what you're getting. Rovercity.com has the best price out there unless you can scrounge one up on EBay (I just sold mine for a steal, sorry you missed it!).
I've heard those "dumbell weights" are supposedly to help counter vibrations. |

What most people refer to as a "hitch" is already installed on all LR3s. The expensive part is an additional "hitch receiver" you need in order to actually use it though. It enables you to hook up to your LR3 like a traditional hitch. It's not something you'd want to leave in all the time because it hangs so low. Once you "install" the hitch receiver (it's literally just removing the cover, a red cap, and pushing it up into the permanently mounted hitch.....all under 60 seconds), then you can hook up traditional hitch-racks, tow bar/ball, etc.
![]() Seems like there's always a few of them for sale on eBay going for around $200...still better than $400 from the dealer or $255 new from rovercity.com. Oh, whatever you do, don't waste your money on the LR3 "suitcase" with tow bar and balls. Just read your owner's manual and it'll tell you the length and bar height you should use. Then go buy them from WalMart or wherever. |
