Default Power seat issue, only moves a bit at a time

Have an 05 HSE just bought and the driver seat only moves forward or reverse like 1/2 inch at a time and you have to release the button and push again to move another 1/2 inch. Does something have to be relearned or programmed? Something I hope I can do myself. Please help.

Sounds like the seats need to be reprogrammed/reset/relearned. Try holding the button for a bit and see what happens. You might need to hold it for a minute or so and it might move. Once it starts moving hold it until it is all the ways forward, then move it all the way backwards. Probably best to do it when you aren't sitting in it.

Ok, tried that, didnt work. Still only moves a bit then stops, then you have to let it go and push again

Seat motor assemblies are usually pretty straight forward. Motors typically have 2 wires attached. The switch will reverse the polarity of power applied to spin the motor forward or reverse. Example.. +/- Forward vs, -/+ Aft.

To trouble shoot I would verify nothing appears to be bound up or obstructing the travel of the carriage. May also want to grease any moving components, causing the motor stall force to be exceeded. Like a galled drive screw.

Then verify constant power is being applied to the motor using a multi-meter. Insert the multi-meter leads into the back of the motor connector, contacting the bare pins. With the switch engaged you should see a voltage applied equal to that of your battery. Toggling the switch Forward and Aft should cause the polarity of the reading to flip. Example.. -11.74vdc vs. +11.74vdc.

If voltage is constant and not falling off to zero when the motor stops you likely have a bad seat motor. They are replaceable. There is also a possibility something is binding or restricting carriage motion. The motor will try to spin but will "trip off" when the stall force is exceeded. A weak motor or worn track guide will exhibit the same behavior.

If the voltage is dropping off I would remove the switch and verify its continuity. If continuity check fails, it's the switch.

Also if this has memory seat settings there may be more to investigate.

thanks but i dont think this is a power issue or motor fault. It is a memory seat and i beleive it has to be reprogrammed or relearned. It only moves whether forward and back or recline up and down in small increments at a time and stops. then you have to release the button and go again. It must be a programming thing. I tried holding the button for a long time and that didnt do it.

Your original post didn't mention memory seats or that that the seat back had the same issue.
Your seat memory module has lost its program and needs to be initialized or you have a bad position sensor. When either of these happens the motors will only engage for 0.5s per press of the switch. To recalibrate (learn) the module, you must drive the seat a step at a time to the maximum end of travel for each position, slide, recline, height and tilt.
If it will not recalibrate then it has lost a position sensor feedback (bad sensor). Also battery voltage must be above 10.5v or the memory module will go into sleep mode and ignore input.
