Is premium gas a must?

Hi I am new to this forum. I am picking up my New, Used 2006 LR3 on Monday. I live in Toronto and our gas prices are R-I-D-I-C-U-L-O-U-S!!!!! We are up to $1.20/ L for regular which equates to about $1.35/L for premium. My question is, is it absolutely necessary to use premium gas? Is there some type of fuel inhancer I can add to regular gasoline that will make my car run as if it was given premium?

Second I would use premium if I were you. I mean seriously you just spent 30k plus on that LR3 take proper care of it.

third there is a additive that you can use that will make your car run just like it's on premium it's called premium. By the time you buy enough octane boost to make regular have the proper octane rating it would have been cheaper to buy premium.

The .15 Cent difference between regular and Premium is not that big of deal. on a 75 litre fill up that would be $11.25 difference out of a $101.25= premium $90.00 = Regular

My owners manual say engine knocking/pinging can occur so you could try the reg for a a bit and see if any knocking or pinging occurs.

well in theory the engine management system will retard timing to limit power production so that knocking/pinging will not occur but neither will full power....

I feel the pain at $1.35 a liter (it's the same price here in Saskatoon) but from what I've read premium is all these vehicles should run on and chancing engine problems is just not worth the short term savings. If I thought the extra $10-15 a tank was going to break me I wouldn't drive a LR but then again I'd do all I could to drive it even if I was broke. Enjoy your new ride; once you've driven a LR there is no going back.....

I wouldn't chance it. Not that it would be detrimental, but the $11 difference on a full tank isn't worth the headache that it may cause you later on. Why don't you ask your husband what he thinks!

my dad has an 06 lr3. run premium, the car is tuned to premium and designed for premium. its not worth problems down the road for build up and what not. you might be able to sneak in a few gallons of 91 octane with each fill though. do 75% premium and 25% mid or low grade (91 or 87) and that could work)...but don't just do regular to save a few bucks in the short term....it will catch up in the long term...

As stated above the car will run on regular. It will not kill it. It will not damage it. It will retard the timing to prevent preignition (self preservation). There is however a cost associated with running regular. First, the engine will produce less power. This is not as important on the v8 lr3, as opposed to the Series II disco's with there 180hp engines. Where you will notice the biggest difference is in the fuel economy dept. Mine went from a solid 16.5 average on regular to 17.6 just by running premium. This pretty much makes the price difference a wash. Pump in the good stuff & smile, Your car will.

Thank you all for the advise! I will definately ONLY buy PREMIUM gas. I guess this means I will have to buy less shoes. I mean who needs expensive shoes when your driving an LR3!!!!!!!
