Default Rear Diff Replacement

If you have a non-locking rear diff, and for whatever reason you had to replace it (other than vanity, which would be an expensive thing to do), is the truck able to accept a locking differential without a ton of retrofitting, etc?

Just wondering if anyone has any idea of it is possible.

As I understand it.....no. The heavy duty package with the electronic torque biasing rear differential has unique wiring harness and ECUs specific to that model making retrofit impossible. I imagine with enough money and technical know-how a guy could get around this problem but I would think it would be easier and cheaper just to find a Landy with the factory HD package.

Wait a few years though and some boffin will figure it out or if the Disco/LR3 catches on with the off road/expedition crowd then a aftermarket Co. may well step up with stand alone mechanical unit.

Its possible. See Disco3Club The Discovery 3 and 4 Owners Club • View topic - Locking Diff retro-fit

The OP on that thread eventually lays out all the parts, prices and procedure.

Might want to take your brave pills beforehand.

Karl.

Well it looks as though I am mistaken. The said "boffin" has figured it out. Full marks to him for having the balls to give it a try.

Looks quite involved though, with lots of factory parts (other than the diff itself) required to make it work so you need to look for a 'good' wrecked HD LR3. Better just to look for a not wrecked factory HD LR3 and save the trouble, most regular (ie not off road junkie) owners don't seem to know or care if it is present or not so I would doubt that the price would be significantly different from a standard LR3. It's just finding one in NA is the problem. Looks like many more were fitted with the E-diff for the home market...........while we got chrome running boards

Fascinating all the same, thanks Karl for sharing that.

WOW. Had it been a simple switchout, no biggie. All that work and cost....easier to find one with it for sale.

The human spirit know no bounds......

I know this is sort of off topic for the actual posts here, but not for the title, so for anyone who found it. Here are potentially some helpful information here. I had problems with my Diffs and found that LR does not supply bearings or ring & pinion, only reman units, etc. Although my dealer claimed to give me a repair quote, the fact was they were quoting my a replacement unit, exchange. Anyway after a ton of research I found a company who actually supplies a total kit, at least for the rear.

the rebuild kits are available. PM for details
