Hello all, took my 2006 LR3 in to have a scheduled service done today... and upon picking it up, the service guy informs me that my brakes are at less than 5 percent and that the pads AND rotors need to be replaced. I bought the car from them last october certified with 16K miles on it, and i have only put 9K on since. So, 25K miles and in need of a complete brake job... sounds excessive... The tires are also at their wear points and the front drivers side is about bald on the inside...
Service guy said that certified vehicles have to have minimum of 50 percent brake pad life left if they are to be sold as certified and meet that requirement...
I drive easy, and am baffled at how I went from 50 percent brakes to scored rotors in 9K miles??? unless those pads were already below 50 percent life...
You can probably get away with just pads. Tell them to give you rotor measurements and the minimum rotor thickness front and rear. When I certify cars I always replace the pads regardless of pad thickness to avoid this kind of situation. Where are you located and what dealer did you go to?

I am in Valencia, but purchased in Ventura... at, well.. Ventura Land Rover/Jaguar.
Just seems a bit wacky after 9500 miles.
Gotta replace the tires too, but I knew the stock tires were poo... and boy did they prove to be. Looking to nab some Cooper Zeon LTZ... can't find any in the area... boo. ...any direction would be much appreciated, as I feel a bit anxious drivimg around on the bad tires, which got even worse when they reported that two of the four tires have a nail each in the sidewall... guess I will be getting around on the 1098 this week.
I am taking the LR3 in to a trusted guy my family has used for years who is gonna tell it like it is. He has done many cars for us, is honest, reputable, and will shoot straight... If he says pads and rotors... then pads and rotors. Just seems so odd that they are needed after 9K miles...
I like the Nitto Terra Grapplers on the LR3. They have a good tread and look beefy too. I hope you aren't complaining about riding the 1098 all week lol. One thing I reccomend is that you get factory pads and rotors (if thats the case) because aftermarket stuff is junk and will squeek like crazy. LR just released updated rear pads that are super quiet compared to aftermarkets. If you ever need a good LR tech, I'm a tech at a Los Angeles dealer (PM me if you want details) and I'll help you out.

Oh yea, also the brakes wear out pretty quickly on these LR3s because of their weight and pad/rotor softness. If you had 50% left on the pads when they sold it, you are lucky to get 9k out of them. I rarely see a set of pads make it to 20k miles, mostly see them wear out 10-15k miles.

Most people are reporting an average of about 30k (unscientific poll) and I have 66,600 miles on my '05 and have yet to replace my front pads. My rears got over 50k miles before being replaced and my rotors were fine. So, needless to say, individual results may vary.
Thanks all for the info! Like I said, getting a second 'independent' opinion from a good guy who has no reason to try and sell me anything... if he says I need new pads and rotors all around, then so be it... and I'll have it done with facory LR pads and rotors.
As for the tires, are these Coopers hard to find? I have an Americas/Discount tire in the area and I know they can order up the Nitto Terra Grapplers and have em' thursday for $217 each plus $15 install per tire (although he asked if the price seemed OK which tells me they may be willing to deal), but I have not asked about the Coopers yet. I will call this morning. I was gonna buy the tires from California Chrome in fourteen days since I am having them Black Fusion Coat my wheels... but I think it would be silly to be driving around on bad tires with nails in the sidewalls for 2 weeks...
It is common practice for a dealer to hit you with that sort of brake estimate.
Do yourself a favor, if your brakes are not shaking on hard stops, then go to Atlantic British and buy their best EBC brake pad sets and sensors and get them installed. Leave the rotors alone, do not have anyone try to machine them.
Better yet, do them yourself and you'll only spend $250 or so. Make sure that sound deadening spray is used and do a full brake bleed, apx 3 pints of DOT 4.

Thanks Disco Mike! I haven't noticed any brake shake or shudder under regular braking or on hard stops... but I have not had a hard stops yet. I do have British Pacific right by my house... and they have the OEM and the Ferodo(which they recommend) brake pads in stock, and he stocks the non-OEM rotors which are half the price of the genuine OEM rotors and they say they are every bit as good as the OEM at a much better price, of course he says some insist on the genuine rotor... which he is happy to order and sell me, but he believes there is no reason. Any thoughts?
For the record... I am not trying to be cheap with the replacement parts... just being mindful of the tally as I am having the wheels powder coated black, ordering all new nitto or cooper tires, and now having a complete brake job done(pending word from second set of honest eyes) ...so, if the rotors are every bit as good at half price, and are only gonna last 20K miles anyway... then why not?
Anybody heard any positives on those Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10 tires?
...or shall I just hit the Nittos and be done with it since I am having trouble locating the Cooper Zeon LTZ in 285/60R18
ooh... sorry to post so much, but I just called american tire down the street and he can get the cooper zeon ltz in 285/60R18 for $160 a tire and have them in 2-3 days... sounds good? nittos are $217 each, and i hear the Coopers compare favorably to the nittos...
Do your self a huge favor and go to , Land Rover - Parts, Accessories and Information and order their EBC pads, forget the rotors for now. LR3's eat pads and those cheap ones you have mentioned are below cheap when it comes to wear and stopping power.

Oh well, guess I did a bad because I went with the Ferodo pads... but I did order the Cooper Zeons, so yay! If the braking is that bad on the Ferodas, I can always go another route before they wear out... which I am guessing will be about this time next year. Funny, Guy at Pacific Rover said they were good pads in comparison to OEM rover pads...
On a side note, I am having my wheels powdered black in the am tomorrow and they offered to throw a set of new 19" RR sport wheels and new tires on the car while I wait the week for my 18's to be powdered, then they will swap em' for my wheels mounted with the coopers when my wheels are done. Is there any problem with fit on the LR3 with those 19" RR sport wheels? is this a no-no?
