Default 9" Tread

I'm looking for an MT with a 9" tread. There are a parks down here that require this in order to get their permits.

Do any of these have a 9" tread...

I think it will depend on the tire manufacturer. Of 4 that I checked, only Sumitomo lists tread width in their specs (BFG, GY and Toyo do not).

Sumitomo lists the 285/75/16 Durango M/T as 8.9 in. tread width - less than the 9.5 for the tire you checked. Your other two sizes are 7.4 (255/85) and 7.6 in. width.

In your case I think it will depend on who is measuring the tire (since someone at the park will likely be checking). Sumitomos seem to have a wide shoulder that they are not including in the tread width measurement. The section width of the 285/75 is 11.3. I could see someone including the shoulders and disqualifying this tire (the 255/85 might be safer).

Butler, you're right...the tire I measured in 285 was a BFG MT. Very square tread.

I would be looking for a BFG MT. I was making a few phone calls too and I was told that it would also deopend on the widt of the wheel it goes on. In this case, I plan to put them on NATO wheels.

9" tread? Do you mean the tyre width?

Seems like an odd requirement. Anyhow if you do then there are 25.4mm to the inch.

So a 285/75 tyre has a 285mm width or (285 / 25.4) 11.22"

A 9" wide tyre would be 228.6mm, so only 225's and smaller will be acceptable.

Yep..I do mean tire width. I have 245/75/16 but they are 8.5" wide, and the park rangers dont let anything slide.

umm I wonder where the measurement is being taken from?

I mean a 245/75/16 has a 245mm width or 9.65".

Same as a tyre like a 31.10.50R15 has a 10.5" width which would be equal to a 265/xxR15 in metric width (is actually 266.7mm).

The 8.5" you have isn't the rim width requirement is it? Such as a 8.5j rim (16x8.5).

Hmmm...i guess I should call them up and see from where to where it is that they are measuring. If anything I'll show up air down and have them measure the contact patch..lol

Yup, 225 will put you there, (8-55/64") No wider.
Acutally a 230 is much closer (9-1/16") If you wanna show 'em that.

aha...got the exact thing i needed....Tread Face width...my tire is 9.6 wide over all...but my tread is like 8.5

So then a 265 should be more than a enough, correct?

If they require AT LEAST a 9" tread then yes, you'll be fine with that. Anything over 230 will be within the regs.
