Default All Terrains or M/Ts?

I'm torn between mud terrains and all terrains. Most of my offroading will be on unserviced fireroads and my biggest obstacle will be mud. Im leaning towards MTs, but its also my daily driver and dont want a tire thats too loud or hard to live with.

Suggestions??

My 99 D2 is my primary driver, I run 265/75/16 BFG MT's and have for 8 years at around 55,000 miles a set. They are my choice over a AT that will not handle mud, slime or snow.

Thanks Mike. I was leaning toward the BFGs. How's the noise on the highway?

They don't make those BFG anymore. Only the KM2s.

Default Mt's

Since they give you the best of both worlds MT's all the way.Mine also ride smooth(relative) and are surprisingly quiet.

I have been through 5 different MTs off road (on a rubicon though) truxxus mts are a great mud tire and good on the road, but very soft compound, so if you use them expect to by tires every 10000 miles, the superswamper SSRs, are the next step up in mud, and still be road worthy, decent milage off them too.

But in the long run, i ended with BFG-KM2s lost a little over rocks, not quite as good in mud vs any swamper. but they are a great on/off road tire. the compound is harder the lugs are spaced nice, so not very loud and a good over all off road tire.

Mickey thompson MTZ were a nice tire on/off road too, but again sidewalls integrity was in issue when doing roocks.

they lack a little on side wall protection, not an issue for mud, but if you hiy the rocks at all be a smarter driver.

the trick with mud, not that you need to be told , is having enough wheel spin (torque) to clean them out. any tire will clog with mud at low RPM, its the tire that cleans the easiest that makes the best mud tire.
