Hey guys. Just wondering. I'm due for new tires and currently run 265/75R16's with a Rovertym 3" HD lift and Blistein remote reservoir shocks with no issues. I'm considering going to 285's. Rovertym tells me no prob other than I might have to trim off an inch of their sliders at the front. My rear door is converted and will hold the spare no problem as well. Is there any other reason I should NOT try one size larger?? I'm already sucked out for power and wearing pinion seals regularly so I'm going to a double cardan joint drive shaft soon. Any other things that I should consider? I really WANT 285's. I think they will look great on my truck. Tire choice is BFG MT KM2.

Hi Mike. Thanks for the input. Right now I only get about 10.5 MPG according to my calcs! About 330 kilometers per tank. Have to bring Jerry cans everywhere when hunting or camping here in Canada. Are you suggesting that with the change of gearing I will not only get back power but also more MPG?? With our Gas prices at $1.40-$1.49 per liter, it might not take long to get back my investment! I have never had a tuneup, changed wires or plugs or cleaned the fuel system other than pour in fuel treatment, so maybe that would help too.
My understanding is that when you buy your lockers, they include the gears right? So it would be better to get lockers both front and rear rather than just rear and gears up front? Do I change anything anywhere else like in the t-case?? I ask now because the t-case is on my garage floor as I type and was planning on doing that right away, although I might just wait if it would be easier. Doing lockers and gears and hd axles at once will be a little out of my budget for now. Off work for a while due to a heart attack and now a lasting heart condition so have to be careful with my liquid cash. Hard to keep gas in the tank these days with the mileage I get and cost of fuel. |
