A bit late, but FWIW...

I had to trim to put BFG ATs on my D2 with an OME HD lift setup.

You shouldn't have had to trim, not for 265's, [i] know people who are running 285's with little problems as far a run goes.

I only had to trim the lowest 2 inches or so of the front bumper to clear the very square edges of the tires. I'll still rub the top part of a mud flap now and again, too.

Very little trimming indeed, and maybe I was premature. Oh well, the bumper was cracked there anyway!

I had to trim my front bumper as well, just a little off the bottom and push the front part of the wheel wells forward. No rubbing now.

Im looking at a Rovertym 2" springs and some OME Shocks.

I've been tossing the Idea of 285/65R18 BFG AT's. I go wheeling every weekend when permissable. And I drive my LR pretty well every day to work and back 75% of the time (Year). Is it worth it for city driving?

The other question is will this setup be good for the 33" TSL Boggers I had in mind? 10.50 or 12.50?

Would I be better off with the 3" Lift?

I have no problem trimming if its not readily visable at a glance from the exterior.

*Im just shooting off Idea's as I type. My overall plan is to have 2 sets of tires for regular and off-road use. I dont want to use the boggers all the time off road, so the other set has to be good, etc. I want a capable, adaptable rig.

==============

I did some more research on tire chains. I was under the impression they were like $200/Pair. Turns out they are $50/Pair. The $200 ones are the custom built V-bar non-adjusting setup.

Alak, you are going to want to get 16 inch rims if you are going to be doing much off road tire shopping.

I cannot answer the 3 inch lift question fully, other than I was told from many sources that going with a 3+ inch lift would create the possibility of having to do more mods(extend brake lines, possible vibrations, HD axles depending on tire size etc.), the 2 inch is pretty simple mod and great for a daily driver.

If you have the money for two sets of tires or big lifts then great, but I think these rigs are pretty capable with just a 2 inch lift and I think you could find one tire that would be decent on the street and still be happy off-roading with. Check out the BFG M/T(toughest tire), Firestone Destination M/T(great traction on many surfaces)or the new Procomp Xtreme mud terrain(not as good as the others in mud but very quiet).

I guess it just depends on how hard core of four wheeling you want to do vs money spent.

I put a set of 255/60/18 General Grabber AT2s on my d2 a couple months ago and they've been great both on and off the road. They're quiet on the highway at speed too. They also come in the stock size 255/55/18.
Just my 2 cents plus tax, handling charges and return fees.

General Tire Car / Light Truck / SUV -Grabber™ AT2

This is what they look like on my truck.

New tires, springs and shocks

Yes, those are great all around tires, good price too. Tough for any A/T to get real serious in the mud though, but there are always chains.

Grabber review: The General Grabber AT2 is General Tire's All-Terrain tire designed and developed for pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles that need a tire that will perform well in all conditions while providing a degree of offroad traction. General Tire designed the Grabber AT2 to meet these expectations and does provide exceptional traction over all-terrains in dry, wet and snowy conditions. Highlighted features of the General The Grabber AT2 include a chip and tear resistant, highly siped all-terrain tread compound. It's 5-Row Tread Pattern is highly siped to provide exceptional traction in it's class in wet weather conditions as well as in winter weather driving conditions. The moderately aggressive computer optimized tread pattern helps the tire to remain relatively quiet during road and highway driving. Internally the General Grabber AT2 carcass structure includes twin steel belts on top of a 2-ply polyester cord sidewall to combine strength and durability with a uniform ride. Offroad the General Grabber AT2 performs well for an AT tire in most offroad terrain conditions. In conditions such as dirt, gravel, forested trails and sand, the Grabber AT2 finds decent traction especially when aired down a little, allowing the tire to conform better around obstacles and terrains. In mud the General Grabber AT2 does well for an AT until the mud becomes deep and thick, which then quickly clogs the tread voids and traction is minimized however this clogged tread scenario is common with most All Terrain tires and the Grabber AT2 is about average in this area when compared to other AT tires. The Grabber AT2 is designed to do well in snow and as most users report, it does very well in winter driving conditions and the outer tread lugs are designed to accommodate studs for enhanced winter traction. Size availability is good with many sizes to choose from and the Grabber AT2 is priced right for may budgets.

I figure I can fit 285/65R18 BFG's on a 2" lift without a problem. 32.7" Diameter. Its just if I go with something like the TSL Bogger for occasional use, its NOT something you want to collide with anything. The tread pattern is essentially like a chop saw with whatever it hits.

I'd like to keep the 18's on it for looks reasons. According to Rovertym, you only need to do those other mods on the 3" lift if you have an RRC, D1 or D90. Apparently, the D2 only requires ABS extentions (and a few other nick nacks).

Im not too sure really what to do. I mean the 2" saves a buck and its just right. But will it be enough for a 33 at around 12.5" wide? (the BFG's are like 11" wide or some such).

I just was not sure that you could get the Bogger in that size with the 18 inch rim, double check that.

You may be able to fit the 32.7 inch tire with the rovertym 2 inch lift but would not recommend it with the OME 2 inch lift, thats just my opinion, others may say no problem. If you want to run that big of tire (33-12.50 in the TSL) you should do the rovertym 3 inch I would think. The DII's have fairly large tire wells though.

Just remember that without going to lower gears, you will feel a power loss with that size tire for sure, plus a noticeable drop in gas mileage. If you decide to go with lower gears then at that point you may want to even consider heavy duty axles with those big tires, some guys run them with stock axles without problems, others run into problems.

I was in the same boat as you a couple months ago trying to decide which way to go, because I tow a lot, I went with 265/75/16's with the 2 inch OME lift. Plus I just liked the idea of not having to worry about anything else, again just keeping it simple.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I agree. If you raise it only 2" with that size tire you may regret not using the higher lift down the trail. No sense to do it twice.

Merry Christmas!

Thanks guys.

To clairify, the TSL's will be on 16" rims. The 33x12.50R16 Tires work out to 33.3" Diameter.

I think the 3" Just might be the way to go. And Run 33's. Its not like I have car payments or expensive insurance, so paying out the Butt for Gas doesnt even make me flinch.

Future drivetrain mods are to include upgraded axles, regearing and of course, ARB Air-Lockers.

Im also looking into installing a CDL apparatus, but that either requires some disassembly of the transfer box, or installation of another one.

Im looking to order around the 2nd week of january for the lift anyways. I have to shop around for a good price on BFG All-Terrains. $350/tire is unacceptable.

Just to follow up, I ended up going with a few local recommendations.

The Rovertym 2" lift with OME shocks and a 32" BFG Mud Terrain tire.

I'll be using the 18's and whatever rubber is on them now as my city/DD tire for now.

The 2" lift was highly recommended because of the price to performance ratio. The 32" tire was also highly recommended as good starting place.

I can always go bigger later.
