Default Goin 33"

It has been a few days since a good tire argument, so here I come to the rescue.

I'm looking to upgrade to a larger tire.. ~33" and this is what I'm deciding between:

TSL Thornbird (pretty much ruled out due to terrible reviews of rock performance) - 33x11.50-16LT 32.4" OD

LTB - 34x10.50-16LT 33.6" OD

Trxus M/T - LT255/85R16 32.7" OD

BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM - 255/85QR16 33.3" OD

I have seen the BFGoodriches on Disco's before @ 33.3" OD. The LTB is of similar width and is .3" larger. Small difference in size but large difference in performance. Opinions?

Yowzas...take the thornbirds out of the selection indefinitely...they suck in the Mud as well!

If you dont mind compromising some on-road performance, go with LTBs. If your trucks going to see a fair share of road AND trials...BFG M/Ts

Let me clarify some...

Opinions should be on the tires soley. Not on what set up would be required to run them. (Heading off that inevitable argument)

I agree, I just thought I should throw em in there to be fair. Not many ~33" OD tires that are narrow.

I would say the Truxs MT's Cool tires and the prices are good for them.

The TruXus MT's are great tires, but I heard that their life span is not that great. So they are probably best for the weekend excursion to the off road park, or whatever, that is just my 2 cents.

I have to like those BFG Mud Terrains, heard a lot of great stuff and what performance you get out of them.

I've been running BFG 32" A/T on the '98 D1 for some time with great results (new set came w/ the truck)........when it's time to put some new shoes on her it'll be BFG 33" M/Ts

2X on the Trxus......great tire in the mud and the looks don't hurt, but seemed to wear quickly on the '96 D1..........if I get them again they'd go on a weekend truck or some weekend wheels.

The thornbirds suck. Forget them.

The truxxus...kinda hard to say. They look aggressive but they have never seem to perform very well. Everyone I know who has run them has gotten rid of them within a few wheeling trips. So...that should say something. Overall, I WOULD NOT recommend them.

The LTBs are going to perform the best out of any you have chosen off road. On road, they are going to suck MAJOR balls. Off road they cut through mud and cling to rock. If you want off road performance, this is it. But they are bias ply and on the road they are loud and fairly uncomfortable. I would definately recommend using airsoft pellets to balance these things since these tires literally change their balance every wheeling trip. If you use traditional weights, they'll be outta balance in a week or so. The airsoft pellets will give you the most hassle free balancing available. My roommate has these and I run the TSLs (34x9.5). If these are going to be a second set of tires for off road, then there is no question: LTBs.

On a side note, I would like to recommend that if you are using a second set of rims, get 15" rims and the 15" LTB. The 16" LTB has a E load rating, and for off road this blows. The 15" has a C rating which is plenty and will perform better off road. Go no wider than a 7" rim for these tires or you'll start risking blown beads, but 7" will give you trouble free service.

BFG M/Ts have had a reputation of cutting sidewalls but I've never had a problem. On rocks, you'll need to air down if you want any love. They perform fairly well in the mud. On road they have good characteristics and don't get loud until about 50% tread. I have a set and use them as my street/easy trail tires. They used to be my everything tire until I get a set of TSLs. These tires are kinda pricey though.

If you don't mind loud tires, look into the khumo venture MTs. Damn things are like beasts off road. Ride ok on road but they will sing you a VERY VERY loud song.

the ltb size is a lie. they are about 23.8 on even close to a 34. if you do some on road driving get the tsl 33 radial

Here's a bit of dissent.

I've had the Trxus in 265/75R16 for almost two years now. I've been very pleased with their performance in sand, mud and rocks. The trails were Mojave Road and Gold Lakes in Cali along with Tellico trails 4, 5 and 6.

The on road wear has been very good. I have almost 20k miles on this set with less than 30% wear. Based on this I expect to get over 35k miles out of this set.

The noise is minimal as well.

I'd recommend them with no reservations.

My $0.02.

Not to get off topic, but hey Stu,

How is trail 6 at Tellico? Cause me and the crew two weekends ago, hit up the second entrance to trail 8 off of 4, took that to 7 and wanted to get to 6 and back to 1. We ran into a really nasty drop at the very end of 7 where it meets up with 6 and had to turn around. What is 6 like?

the truxxs mt's, great tires on and off-road. About to put a set on my D-90, because they are quiet and give you the traction an AT can't

I would go with the 255/85-16 BF M/T's

After my trip to Uwharrie today that's the size I'm considering for my next set of tires of course that's after a ton of other hardware I want first.
