Pat,

Trail 6 is a good one. Try to access it from the 4 and 5 side next time.

Hijack off!

I run truxis 255/85's and they are really great, mud, snow, rocks. they aren't too loud on the road at all. i expect atleast 30,000 miles on this set and at only 135 a tire you can't beat that.

Default Tires

Just wondering but has anyone ever owned a set of thornbirds or just going by what everyone who hasnt owned a set says about them? The reason I ask is I've owned 2 sets. The first set were 29's on a ford ranger and the other set were 33's on a jeep cherokee. They always did awesome in mud, and sand for me. And besides all that other than boggers tbirds are one of the coolest looking tires out there. Now for rocks I never had a chance to use em for that.

You have the bias vs radial issue. Bias will out perform radial off road period. Radials run smoother on road. It all depends what you want to do. BTW the thornbirds were designed for the mud. The purpose of the sidewall lugs is to grab and pull you out the ruts. If you want to go off road check out the Bogger or Swamper lines of tires.

How bad is bad when it comes to on-road performance of a bias tire? I keep hearing that "these tires suck on road" but honestly, how bad can they be? What about them is bad.. the flat spots? The noise?

In my experience they ride a little rougher and make more noise. But then you have to consider you're driving around in a 5,000lbs brick so how much of a difference in handling can they really make?

Default 33's

My heep rode great on the tbirds but it was light. I have a superduty that I had 36 bias iroks on and they rode ok but wore out really fast. Right now I have 285/75/16 durango radial m/t which is comparible to a 33' tire and they ride smooth and do great in the mud.

Thornbirds look good but suck. I have had personal use with them and i would never use them again. I really like the Pro Comp Mud Terrains, Super Swamper Boggers, and BFG Mud Terrains.

Truxxus. I've just burnt through my second set and (as stated previously) got about 30k out of each. All around the best tire I've ever run. Yes they wear fast but in ice, snow, mud, and all the easy stuff (pavement) they're awesome.
Plus...they're cheap

Have to say that I have some BFG AT's on my daily driver and they are great. I always thought I wanted BFG M/T's, for reputation and ease of locating. The P/O had Truxxis M/T's (265-75) on the RRC, 3.5. On road, they do fine, for a big mud tire. At 70 on the flat, just cruises. On the hills, tired little engine stuggles....then I get to the dirt, air them down to like 17 psi and cdl lock and roll. Only time I get wheel spin is when I am bouncing and if I can get on the rock and just inch up, they grab on. Only thing I might do is get them siped next time.

Caveat, geting them. I can get 5 for the price of 4 BFG's, but you need to order in advance and wait...only issue I have found. Probably have 7k on mine, plus whatever P/O had done.

I'll be putting the Maxxis Bighorn MT's 255/85/16 on my Disco 1.
Seen some positive reviews and the price is good..
