Default Help me decide

I currently have a Disc II (2003) with stocker 18" wheels and 255/55/18 tires. Well last weekend I was romping somewhere I shouldn't be and ran over a batch of nails and well lets just say the sidewall of my tires are penetrated with some nice size nails. My question is this. I found that General Grabber AT2 which appear to be a good tire come in my size (255/55/18) but i'm not overly fond of 18" wheels other than the fact they look nice. What size tire would you recommend for stock suspension with some trek outfitters wheels? Would a 245/75/16 fit with no problems on and off road with 16x8 wheels? What about 265/75/16? I need to make a decision within the end of the week. I do plan on putting a 2" RTE lift on this December. Any help would be great. and if anybody has pictures of a Disco with 245/75/16's on it I would love to see them. They just seem like they would be pretty skinny looking on my rover. Thanks guys.

Get the 265/75-16's, then do your lift in December and be happy. You will be fine on the road and greenlanes just don't flex it out until the lift to prevent rubbing. Other wise you will be very unhappy with your undersize tires once the lift is done.

Yea thats what I'm afraid of too. But I'm worried about hitting a huge bump on the interstate and hearing my tires rip the hell out of my underside too :-)

I was debating your exact situation and decided to go with the 265/75/16's over the 245/75/16's. The 265's will fit on your 03 stock suspension, with minor rubbing at worst. Like Kevin said, just don't go out stuffing them, and just be patient until you get the RTE lift a couple months from now. The 245's, in my opinion, will look small with a lift.

I had Generals on my D1 when purchased. You want lots of flat tires get them. I had 2 in one weekend from rock cuts on a dirt road you could have taken a Lexus down. Compared to lots of other tires I've had on Discos they're like wet dishrags.

This is the kind of stuff I wanted to hear. What you recommend in these sizes? BFG T/A? They seem to be a bit over priced if you ask me.

With the BFG AT's, you get what you pay for as far as I'm concerned. They are the best tire I've had.

If price is of concern, I had Firestone Destination AT's on my Heep and was pretty happy with them - they are a little cheaper than BFG's, too.

I'd get the cooper STT's like i use to have and keep the 18's if you just want one set of tires, but you'll need to lift it 2'. I say go with what kevin said and get the 265's because december isn't that far off, and trust me you will be happier with biger tires after the lift. I think my d-90 needs biger tires after the 2' lift and something a little wider would be nice

It you're going to off road, pay a few bucks more and get a good tire. I had Geolander AT 2's on the D2. Good tire, but I didn't think they were that good for off roading, but were nice on the street, which is about the same with any tire that has an all season tread on it. Frankly if I was going back to an all season tread I'd go for the BFG's or the Bridgestones (I had a set of Bridgestones on a Tundra I had, and they were good tires - no flats ever). I currently run Goodyear MTR's, which is what I'll get again when these wear out.

Regarding tire sizes, I went from 255/65/16 to 245/75/16 on the D1, slower on take off, and I now need to drop to 4th gear on hills I used to pull in 5th gear. 265's will be even worse. If I went to that size I'd be wanting to put lower gears in it next, the larger diameter is same as putting higher gears in it.

He has an '03 with the 4.6, you won't really feel a difference. I was leaving my friends 4.0 D2 in the dust on Colorado passes and he was running a smaller tire while I was on 32's.

If I wanted to put some MT's on there say 245/75/16 either Firestone MT's or maybe BFG or Coopers how much worse would the interstate drives be? Pretty ruff ride?
