Question Interested: XZL Replica | Lassa LT/A

I know that I'm giving away my research here but I can't place an order for these unless I know they are going to sell. So I summon the masses.

During my search for XZLs for my truck, I came across a company in Turkey called LASSA. They produce 3 light truck tires. One of them is a replica of the Michelin XZL. Only difference is that they do not have steel belted sidewalls. Its 3-ply rated sidewall and 3-ply steel belted tread. It is only available in 7.50R16. Pricing information is still not available but I have been told by a few people that own them in the UK that they are inexpensive compared to teh XZLs.

What are everyone's thoughts?

I thought the XCL was what everyone drools over.

Those don't strike me as anything I'd have use for.

I think the money involved in importing them would increase their cost to something comparable to an XZL without their biggest benefit: strength.

What price are you looking at offering them at? If they are under $100, yeah you most likely will sell some to the cheap tire buyer.

The tread looks whimpy compared to the originals.

i agree with Rondo, I dont think you are going to get the XZL buyers for what I assume will be a huge price after importing and also as mentioned, they dont have the strength that make the XZL sought after.

One other thought are those knock offs DOT approved?

Chris,

Pricing and approval is what the second email I sent them is about. Supposedly LASSA is Liscenced by Michelin to make these but I got that tid bit from an unreliable source. We'll see. I expect a response by this evening.

It's also a bit inconvenient that they only make them in that one size.

Have you looked into buying them from a Michelin commercial tire retailer? The XZLs are still in use and sold in the US to businesses.

Check out consolidated tires. They carry the XZL and every other michelin commercial tire. As a business you should have no problem getting them. (I expect a discount on my first purchase if you can get ahold of em)

Well... fyi there is an aggressive looking tire sold in Canada and in the States that might interest some of you. Pit Bull Tires and there are three models they have. I think it is worth a look for curiousity's sake.

This is a pic of the "Rocker" model.

The "Maddog" model:

The "Growler":

I was told XZL's are hard to get new due to the fact they are mostly being shipped to the forces over in the war. I phoned one of the major tire service centers in B.C. (KalTire) and they informed me of the current shortage.

I do love my XZL's though... people tend to drool over then

Pitbull tires are great for what they are designed for. Unfortunately they are generally way to big (wide) and are terrible for on-road. They wouldn't make a good "terra trekker" tire.

The May 07 issue of Petersons 4wheel & off-road recently tested the Pit Bull Maddogs. and to make a short story even shorter, they are crap. However the Hercules Trail Digger M/T got rave reveiws. Available in 31' to 33" tire heights and look to have a more functional rather than funky tread pattern. Check them out at www.herculestire.com
