Default Okay, we all have seen opinions on M/T tires... but...

what is the BEST A/T out there for occasional mud? I am looking for a tire that will do 98% of it's time on the highway, but still spends 1/2-1 hour 3x per week playing in the water/sand/mud/snow.

I say the BFG All-Terrains, or maybe for your water, sand, mud, and snow, the Michelin LTX M+S, they are popular on most trucks I see with non-oversized tires. That is my two cents, plus there are plenty more applications for your liking.

Some good MT's will still give you a great ride on road. IMHO.

I have heard good things about how well they do in Ice and Snow. Apparently they do really well in all conditions.

I had Michelin XPC's on both my Disco's ...and I thought they were great in snow, mud, and awesome in sand.
Notice no lettering on the truck.....it looked really clean

ouch....XPCs are around $200 new though!! Thats a total rip-off.....but, you can get them used pretty cheap.

My vote strongly goes to BFG A/Ts.....good for almost anything.....even better then some M/Ts on the market. Perhaps SCSL will chime in, he run them and wheels like a crazy mofo.

That being said, like RoverX mensioned, there is nothing better then your run of the mill M/T tread.....it eats up everything but ice better then any A/T.....and I agree, the BFG/Dunlop/Firestone, etc. etc. etc.....the standard sized (hehe....non-interco) 3-lug design is very comfortable on the road and pretty good wear too.

IMHO, it would be much better to go with a mud terrain if you spend that much time going off-roading.

OOooooo tyre talk, gotta love talking rubber!

Right then, I have had General Grabber ATs (31/10.50/15) on Eva and I have to say that they were an awesome tyre, until they got muddy that is, but great in sand, snow and on the black stuff. Being the daft bloke that I am I did find time during a snowy day to test them fully and I found it next to impossible to get them to slide out.

This weekend I was setting out a new offroad course through a woodland which was a helishly muddy claggy terrain. It was sooooo fun!! Anyway the guy in front had BFG ATs (265/85/16) and they were superb in the clag, coupled with some excellent driving skills too. Everyone knows that the AT is excellent on road, but for an AT tyre they are also very competent on road, plus I have heard of BFG ATs doing 90,000miles before needing to be replaced!!

I have on Eva the BFG MTs (265/85/16s) and they are IMO a phenominal tyre, superb on and offroad and excellent in the snow - They are classed as a Mud + Snow tyre! Best money I have ever spent, love BFGs!

What you have to decide is how often you are going to encounter "real mud", it sounds like your going to be predominantly doing tarmac miles so if I were you I would go with the BFG AT - You won't be disappointed! Promise!

Jeeze.....I didn't know you were such a cheap f'er

Where your truck or car meet the mud and road is NOT a place to save money. That is a lesson I learned once, and I will never need it taught to me again.

So keptin, your head would have probably exploded when I told the dearler to dump the Goodyears on my '03 and put on XPC's before I picked the truck up new...lol

hell yeah it would have....my brain would have melted when they said it was going to cost me $800 for 4 new tires. Though, IMHO, XPCs aren't that amazing.....they are the stocker tires......good tires, very good tires, but they are horribly expensive. Agreed not to go cheap on tires, obviously I didnt want to save money when I bought 5 new BFG M/Ts....one of the most expensive M/Ts at 265/75-16 size. But I mean...what would you rather have. An XPC for $200, or a BFG M/T for $175?

dont get me wrong, You do get what you pay for......but to be blunt, IMO, for the price, XPCs suck.

just my $.02 though..

Vwfye, if you want to talk about bang for the buck....talk to RoverX about what he is running.

Ya know it all comes down to what you are comfortable with.....$25 p/tire really doesn't mean shit to me after buying a new truck, I'm pretty brand loyal to things that I've had good experience with, and I've never been impressed with BFG's
The '03 truck came stock with goodyear wrangler hp crap which I knew was gonna get me stuck in deep fluffy sand asap. So I ordered a new set of XPC's like I had on my 2000 disco, the dealer agreed to mount and balance the tires for free and I gave the new goodyears to one of the LR techs that I knew.............everybody was happy........I had that truck for less than 2 years and traded it in for the RR.

Now if I could just find the right tires for the RR....lol

I guess it depends on your terrain. In Fl we dont have snow so it isnt a big deal. For ATs I agree BFG is a good choice. Strong 3ply sidewall. They are weak in the mud down here, compared to pretty much any MT, but mud and water is pretty much all we see. Ive had the BFGs MTs and really liked them. Great in the mud, although they do clog, but so do most other MTs in the same stuff. If your gonna wheel mud your going to want a mud tire for sure. The BFG MT is not bad on the street. The Bridgestone MT is a nice tire as well. Very nice road manners and pretty quiet, especially when new! Ran those too many years ago when I was debating MTs vs ATs. Only downfall is 2ply sidewalls, so get roadside! Gordo

What about the V-tread directional type tires such as the Procomp Xterrain?

Any other opinions on those?

I have BFG AT's..... They are awsome...In really thick mud they don't clean themselves out the best...but snow, sand, rock and road...I wouldn't chose a different tire!!!
