Default PLEASE HELP on replacing OEM tires

I need to replace the OEM Goodyears on my 2004 Disco. I do a little off roading but fairly tame (Goodyears were sufficient and A/T's would be too much). I need low road noise 255-55-18's with a little more aggressive tread than the Goodyears while maintaining the H speed rating.

I have been a Michellin fan in the past. The tire dealers are throwing Toyos Falkans and all kinds of things at me. Things that I am not familiar with.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions that you might have.

Thanks a bunch!

Last week I replaced the OEM Goodyears on my '03 with Nitto Terra Grapplers (an AT tire). It was either that or Toyo Open Country ATs. I wanted a more aggressive tread that would be better for winter conditions and light offroading (old logging roads etc.). Especially after getting slightly stuck in some soupy but shallow mud in a minor offroad side adventure.

So far I've got about 800Km on them with 700 of those being highway Kms. They are far more quiet and smooth than the Wrangler HPs were. Ashamedly, I don't know the speed rating of the Nitto. They're still very new and I'm obviously honeymooning but so far, I'm very happy with them. I'll be putting another 1200 Kms of highway driving this weekend.

This summer, I'll be pulling a tent trailer and doing some off the beaten path camping. This isn't much help now, but in a few months I'll have a lot more experience with this tire. If you haven't already, search the forum for brands that you are interested in. There's lots of experience to be found here.

Try Michelin Synchrones. I ran about 40,000 miles on them before cutting a sidewall offroad. (They are not reinforced like the Micheliin XPCs.) Great on-road, but go easy offroad. They're smooth, quiet, and gave me about 2mpg more than stock Goodyears. Best part is they track nice and straight at highway speeds. You'll love them on the interstate. 50,000 miles is realistic.

IMO Michelin XPC's are the best for that truck, in the kind of use you are describing.
I loved them soo much on my 2000 that I had the dealer put them on my 2003 before I took delievery.
The synchrones which I now have on my RR do not have an aggressive enuff tread pattern for my taste and the off-roading I do with my truck.

Lightbulb Loaded Question......

There are a LOT of good tires and it is a buyers market.

My D1 came with Michelins and other than a big buzz when I hit 70, they are great. They did not spin in twenty inches of fluff snow with a iced bottom when we got socked by the Big Blizzard of 06 just the other day.

As for replacements if I were buying today, there are Nittos http://www.nittotire.com/lifestyle_offroad_360.asp , the Pirellis http://www.pirelli.com/en_42/tyres/c...t/index_f.html, the Michelins (which I would probably stay with since I already have an investment in them).

Figure out what you want to do. There has been a lot of changes in the tire market. Outfits like Mickey Thompson http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/truck.html ,Nitto http://www.nittotire.com/tires_terragrappler.aspand Pro-Comp http://www.procomptires.com/ and http://truckaddons.com/Catalog/Extre...&GTKW=pro+comp have introduced several models that go with your lifestyle ( I am a 90/10 city/Mud+Snow). They have off-road only, street, and new street yet off-road aggressive lines.

They just created a new line of very aggressive tyres that are very street-friendly yet handle mud wickedly.

Hey All, Thanks for the help. I did end up going with the Nitto Terra Grappler. My tire guy agreed with the majority of posts that that tire would be best for what I was looking to accomplish.

Thanks a bunch!
