Yep XCL's ruled here in the UK and for experditions like the Camel Trophy and such, however I doubt you'll find any as they haven't made them for years. But they where an awesome off road tyre even by todays standards, although rather noisy on the road.

Like I mentioned before I really loved my XZL's but I never used them on a Disco so they may be very different being most equipped discos are breaking the 5,000lbs range and I think my 88 Soft Top was maybe 2,700-3,000lbs. The only thing that I found the XZL's to not be good at was climbing a steep rocky hills. There was one I just could not make it up when everybody else did. But that might have more to do with not having the tires aired down and being a much lighter vehicle than the rest of the group I was the only Series, everybody else was in RRC, Discos and D90's. In mud they seemed great at least to me on a number of occasions I was the only vehicle to make it up some muddy hills climbs.

Good luck in your decision

I think the BFGs, once again, will be my next set of tires. I just hope they make them in that size in the new tread.

I've decided to stay conservative and only go up to a 235/85 for my next set of MTs...as Buddy Lee has suggested

I've located a company in EU that I think is liscenced by Michelin to make replicas of the XZLs...if they dont answer my emails in time, I will definitely have to go with the MTs (and add them to my "ignored emails" list)

If my XLs ever arrive I'll let you know how they work other wise I'd go with either BFG MTR or Buckshot mudders. Buckshots tend to be narrow and tall. I really liked the set I had on an 87 Ford Ranger.

I ran 36 Swampers on a 74 Bronco...great off road but the asphalt really ate them up. Thats the reason I didn't opt for them this time.

From what I've heard, the XZLs are horrible in the mud, and the XCLs are horrible on the street!!

The LTBs will hands down outperform anything else in the southeast. Like, fin. But you gotta be careful: the 16" rim is load range E while the 15" rim is load range C. The C range will offer a lot more performance so going with 15" rims would get you sorted out perfectly.

Even though they say they are 1" taller, they aren't hardly any taller than a 255/85/16 and will run circles around them off road.

Only downside, LTBs are horrible on the street. Loud, out of balance (run BBs!!) and suck on wet pavement. So a second set of roadies is a must.

If you don't mind loud tires, the Khumo muds hook up on all kinds of terrain. Will outperform the BFG off road. They ride fine on road but just ungodly loud.

For my money I would get the tires that suit your off road needs the best and then buy a secound set of AT/street tires to pound the pavement with. It could cost a little more but you will get more life out of both sets and you dont have to give up any on road or off road performance. to keep costs down look for a 2nd set of used wheels (in good condition) but I always use new tires on the road. Used tires are like used shoes, they may look like they are new but they feel funny !

I considered getting a second set of wheels/tires but the only way I'll do this is with a set of either Simex tires (4x4AG) or Boggers for events like MAR or FLRC rallies...and this would be after some more lift.

Now, more than ever, I find myself wanting/needing a second Rover. I'd really like to get something as fuel efficient as a late Freelander but also desire a prestine 97' Coniston Green D90 SW, 04 DII, or 95' RRC LWB...so having a second set of tires wouldn't be necessary.

Max, which Kumhos, the 834s or the KL71s?

By the way guys, my tires still have a few months left in them so until the time comes to finally replace, keep these great suggestions and comments coming

What I would really like to find are the BFG Mud Terrains with the new tread design in 235/85/16...

The XCLs arrived the other.
On road is not bad a bit more noise than BFG AT...
I couldn't feel, in the steering, any real difference at 65mph or handling differences.
I'll know later this week how they handle off-road.

By the way I'm running the 6.5x16 (107mmx108mm) on a SIII 88

No insult... but don't bother with a Freelander/LR2. They don't do anything special in my opinion. Too many compromises... i.e. pretty good for a mini SUV... don't compromise. Get the best fuel efficient, sports, etc. I daily drive my somewhat modded RR every day. A second car would have to be fun and exciting in some other way! WRX STi, 350z, Saleen Stang, P-car. Average cars are for ... well OTHER people. Again no insult menant... my brain just can't see such a compromise that does nothing well.

When is the new tread pattern coming? I saw prototypes of these back in 2005 at the Leadville rally, but they threatened to kill me if I ever said anything. What's that noise behind meeeeee.eee.e.e..e arrrghghhghg.

Todd,

You couldnt be more right and no insult taken. Always nice to stand out. I have, however, wheeled in a 2003 Freelander through Florida mud and it did MUCH better than I expected. The power to weight ratio is efficient and makes it a nimble truck. I'm complaining about gas now but will most likely end up with another V8 Rover. I tried to convice myself to look into Sedans but there really isnt anything out there that tickles my pickle...the ones that do are way out of my price range (M5)

I just didn't want to insult the current LR2/FL owners.

I've thought if I go further with my RR, I'd like a little commuter. 400 hp Mini, R32.... although I may have access to a 944 S2 Cab soon. But the ultimate second car.... Ariel Atom!

I've always said I'd rather have 2 ridiculous cars than 1 that tries to do all.

good outlook...

I have always like the later 944s as well, but now a days, I'd really like to get something new (the three rover options I mentioned arent, but I love me some Rovers)

GEt back on track

Get the 255/85 MT's. At lower altitude you'll be fine with hp. Get some spacers if you need the room.
