Talking 'Rim job'...

Flat black Rustoleum primer: $9.63

Masking tape: $2.14

Beer: $14.07

Time spent trying to get that one last lugnut off that Frank tightened like a mother$#%@*& when he did the brake job: 4 hours

Time spent painting rims: 2 hours (not including drying time)

Being able to whip out a can of spray paint to fix any trail scratches: Priceless

Honestly, what the hell is up with that? Not Frank, but with shops contact-welding the lug nuts to the hubs? I mean OK, we've got big beefy lug nuts, and I guess some people feel the need to get them really tight. I confess, I use a torque wrench and torque them to 105 ft lbs, and that's really tight, tighter than the 95 that the manual reccommends. Still, when I go back to take them off, they come off easily.

But when I bought my '98 p38, my brother-in-law and I actually ruined a lug wrench trying to get the lugs off. About 8 of the 20 lugs were on so tight that an impact wrench cranked up to 120psi couldn't get them off. I eventually jumped up and down with all of my 240 lbs on the end of the lug wrench, and after a couple of hours of this, we finally got them all off, but the lug wrench was bent beyond recognition.

My brother in law had nearly as much trouble getting the lugs off his D2, which he bought new and never took anywhere but the dealer. My Classic had the same problem when I first bought it.

What the hell? Do they just jackhammer the hell out of them with an industrial-strength impact wrench?

Oh yeah, nice wheels.

LOL...I bent mine too! Went out and bought a 26mm impact socket that I now attach to a pry bar. When I had the tires put on last year the guys at the shop didn't believe me when I said only torque 'em to 90#. They refused at first, saying it was a safety issue and wanted to do it to 120#. It wasn't until they looked it up that they agreed. Now, they listen to everything I tell them about rovers (been using that shop since I was 13, yes that's when I got my first vehicle).

Hey X, did you sand your rims before paint? Also are your aluminum?

I wanna do this also, plus I have seen llera's wheels on his Car Domain site and I wanna do it too.
