Default spare tire question

what do you all with non original sized [oversized] tires carry as a spare? is it the same size as the tires you are running or the factory size? i read about wind up when running an odd sized tire. i know a larger spare needs to be retofitted in the spare tire stowage. thanks in advance. jim 95 lwb

ALWAYS carry the same size spare as the rest of your tires! Not sure about the RRC lwb models but on the Disco you can carry up to a 265/75/16 without inverting your carrier.

I used to run 245/75/16's and would let the air out of the spare to fit in the RRC wheelwell. Obviously, you need to carry an air supply.

On a coiler rover with the permenant 4wd, you WILL DESTROY something by running an odd-sized tire. That is unless you disconnect one of the driveshafts but that is another story.

With two different tire sizes, one tire is travelling faster than the other. This will chew up your spider gears and effectively put the diff out of commission. Which really sucks.

Always carry the same size spare, on most Discos you can go up to a 285 if you invert the spare tire carrier.

SPARE TIRE RELOCATOR - W/ PARK DISTANCE CONTROL
Item: 8284
Model: Discovery Series II In Stock! $99.95

Carry a Larger Spare Tire on Your Spare Tire Mount.
If you're running larger tires on your Discovery you may have noticed by now that you can't use your factory spare mount because the bumper gets in the way of the tire! Install this handy spare tire lift kit and you'll avoid this problem, as it lifts the larger tire up above the bumper without over-stressing your original spare mount. Install it once and you're done. 1" taller for 33-34" tires on vehicles with Park Distance Control.
Are there any benifts to the replacement bracket???

Michael

No, not at all, it is very easy to invert your factory carrier and carry a 265 or 285.
Go to Expedition Exchange and look up the directions, no parts involved, about 1 1/2 hours to switch it over.

Do you know where else I can look?

yes

I usually recommend to stay away from the bracket idea. It is easier then flipping the carrier, but it also moves the tire out away from the latch...which puts more strain on the latch when your bouncing around. Return it if you can, if you cant, just keep it.....it wont really do any harm...just cost more is all. If you do return it (which I think you'll be able to), we can walk you through flipping the carrier.....its about a 1.5-2 hour job the first time. Its simple enough that you could get it done in 45mins the 2nd time.

Undo the material, unbolt the carrier, flip it, cut rear wiper arm notch, repaint, dry, rebolt, reattach material...done.

Currently don't have a spare and didn't for the last set of tyres. I carry tyre plyers easy to remove the tyre fix hole and replace, the air tank and compressor can re-inflate a tyre in a minute. The other option is to carry a tube, remove the object that is penetrating the tyre, put in tube and fill it up. After saying all this I am buying a spare this time save time and effort, but considering that I fix the holes anyway there is no real saving in work it's just an excuse for

Why do you say it doesn't work?
I must know a dozen or more people that will disagree with you, works fine.
