Default Super Swamper

Does anyone have experience with the Special Service Super Swamper TSL on their Rover or any other Super Swamper? I know they are great offroad, but how are their on road manners?

I dont know much about Super Swamper they are excellent of road and have a very rugged appearance. I thing I've heard is that they are a bitch to balance other than that I haven't heard anything bad about them if fact when my Commache AT's play out I'm buying the Truxs Mud Terrains. this time in a 285/75/16 size.

I had trxus on mine, they're amazing off-road, look aggresive as hell, but ware down very fast unless constantly rotated.

The TSL radials are good tires but wear quickly on a heavy rig like ours

The SSR's are good mud tires bug chunk easily on rocks. They are also known (in Colorado) to have sidewall issues.

The TrXus M/Ts are a good all-'round tire for a Rover that sees trails consistently. The sidewalls are very thick and do not flex/conform as well as some other radials. IMO they are a better mud & trail tire than a rock tire. I have them on my rig here in VA but they would not have been my choice in CO.

As for Interco's bias tires, none wear well enough for a Rover that is driven daily. But the TSLs and TSL SXs are some of the best off-road tires available. Boggers are obviously outstanding mud tires but wear quick, are poor on rocks, and most Rover drive-trains cannot handle them. IROKs wear quickes of them all. Expect fewer than 10,000 miles. LTBs are excellent mud tires but poor rock tires. Hopefully Interco will start making some more sizes... right now it's pizza cutters or, I think, 42's.

I run 34x9.5x15s on my 109.

The flat spot pretty bad but once you get them warmed up they actually ride fairly smooth. For balancing, I put in about 3000 BBs inside the tire. It balances wonderfully and also it makes a cool sound when you come to a complete stop.

For the most part, I try to keep these tires as off road tires only. I did run them constantly for about two months with no problems. I really think the BBs helped out a lot to keep them in balance which is the biggest problem with swampers.

Now remember, they are going to be REALLY LOUD. Like, REALLY REALLY loud. So just crank up the radio and you are good to go.

Life expectancy of these tires is pretty low but the benefit off road is almost unparalleled (red label BFG Krawlers and bias ply IROKS are obviously superior...but at a price). Now, don't waster your time with SSRs or TSL radials. I've seen both of them suck (at least in our terrain, Tellico, Morris mountain, etc). Both of those tires don't stick to rocks worth crap. Due to their poor performance, I say bypass them and go with a real TSL.

I run the 34x10.5-16 LTB on my hybrid and they rock in New England conditions, literally transforming the rig. I siped the center blocks and it quiets them down a bit and helps with wet and rock traction. They are my second set of tires, I have a set of coopers for road and winter.

The other thing to remember is that they are bias plys and for them to work well offroad you need to REALLY air them down, I run around 8 lbs. Run them at 15 and they are no where near as good.

If they work best at that air pressure, do you use bead locks?

No need to, bias plys have extremely thick sidewalls. They don't even looked aired down at 8 lbs. but when you hit a rock or ledge they conform to it nicely. Land Rover alloys have very good bead retention

The problem is I have a set of steelies that are a 5.5" rim that I wanted to use because it would be a second set. I have been told it shouldn't be a prob. The Super Swamper recs 6.5". It may not be a problem until they are aired down. I do not know. I was considering getting a set of the Gulf Coast American Racing Wheels.

Go with the narrower rim. If you are wondering why, watch the guy mount the tires. It'll be a bitch and a half to get the tires on those skinny rims. That means its gonna be a bitch and a half to get them off again.

Narrow rims are capable of holding tires on better than wider rims. I recommend them more than wider rims.

What kind of terrain do you deal with? Mud? Rocks? Muddy rocks? I've heard TSL radials are the bomb in the mud. I haven't heard too many good things about them on the rocks, but then again I won't discuss the judgement of the judging individual...

Mud mud mud and loose dirt trails. will be trying it out on some trails up in the Markleeville Ca area when the snow melts next year.

I'm thinking of buying TSL's for a second set of tires, but need to buy some kind of rims like used alloys or steelies. and out here in TN i have seen alot of trail trucks with TSL's
