Does anyone have anything bad to say about Nitto's Terra Grapplers? I drive this truck to work, are they noisy? They seem like they're about the most aggressive tire out there that comes in the 255/55/r18. Am I missing any other possibilities?

Well, these tires, have been the talk of the forum for Wheels and Tires. I'd imagine, despite being expensive, they are good off-road performing tires.

My friend has them in 18's on his F-350. he wanted BFg's, but they were backordered, so he tried these. That was about a year ago, and so far he's been thrilled with them. Good ride, good wear, and good traction. Of corse his is a powerstroke deisel, so can't tell about the noise.

The only other AT tire I could find in that size was the Toyo Open Country AT. |

As far as expense for the terra grapplers goes, I would actually spend almost 70.00 dollars less per tire than if I were to re-shoe the truck with the goodyear wranglers that came on it. Its looking more and more like Im about to be a nitto advocate

Do a search on the forum for Nitto Terra Grappler. You should find tons of info, most of it from me
Awesome tire, 1000% better than the OEM junk that came with the truck. I have about 30K on them now and they still look brand new. Traction is supurb and noise is minimal. Just remember to rotate them frequently (I do it with every oil change, Discount Tire thinks I am a pain in the ass, oh well!) The only time I have found them slighly less sure footed is in the slush, but then again, not too many tires excel in this area.

Thanks for all y'alls helpful input. 02disco2, I think, might be an undercover salesman for Nitto! His review and comments on this specific tire didnt leave me with any reason to not go the way I have. I just put in an order for five new Nitto Terra Grapplers from Discount Tire. I'll keep you posted on my experience with them as I put some miles and mud on them. Thanks again - Brian

They are great. No substantial wear, not too noisy, and definately the most agressive things out there.
I do not know their winter capability as I put on Nokians on 16" wheels for the winter, but I imagine they would do fine in all but the worst snow. When the crappy stock tires wear out on the 2002 Disco, the grapplers will go on. For the Classic, there are lots of choices for the 16" wheels. Let me know if you need any further info. Gordon

As I've pointed out here before, the BFG TA A/T's have three ply sidewalls. The nittos don't. They will both perform similarly until you graze a hard rock with the side wall. It all depends on what kind of off-roading you do. Here out west, we have plenty of rocks, and love 'em. That's why I've always used the BFG's on my disco with the stock 16" wheels. Wanna see a stock Michelin with a gashed side?

As noted above I have the Terra Grapplers. I only have them because of the 18" wheels. These would not be my tire of choice for 16" wheels. Right now, I have Nokians on all of my 16" wheels for the winters. If I were to go any more than light trail off road, I would not choose the grapplers. Too thin a sidewall.
So, if you want a road tire that is a bit more agressive than anything else out there in the 18" size, the Grapplers are a good choice. If you plan extreme off roading, get some 16" wheels and some real off road tires. Let me know if you need any further information. Gordon

One thing to think about is, why don't they make more 18" MT type tires??
Because of the side walls especially when you are aired down to the 18# area, you will cut the hell out of those side walls. 16" tires are more stable then 18's and have much stronger side walls. Mike J. |
