Default Tire Pressures

Hi just got rid of my nasty Michelins...why Land Rover punishes us in South Africa with this rubbish....some tires have three damn holes in them and the side walls look as if they have been shot at.

On the possitive side got 65 000K's...and had some left...but I was concerned about safety....so..

Bought BF KO's A/T 245/70/16. Had them on my 2001 Discovery and they were great! Except for the wet/slippery tar roads...not many of them in South Africa...they lasted forever and were great off road...not a single puncture in 100 000K's!!

Gives me a little more clearance and looks stunning on the Landy. Not that noisey as people think.

Any ideas?

Now....my question....what tyre pressure to use...I know it has been asked a 1000 000 times but I want to be sure.

It varies from tyre to tyre. It also depends on what you have loaded up on your Disco, etc. The only factual way to set tyre pressure for YOUR vehicle is to use the static load radius. Even though a lot of the tyre manufacturers do not have it listed in their specs, if you email them they should be able to provide it for you. It is the distance from the centre of the wheel to the ground when you have the correct tyre pressure. So you adjust the tyre pressure up or down to get the correct height and then take a note of the tyre pressure. That tyre pressure can them simply be referenced when you have that loaded condition again. So you will have different tyre pressure for say when you are empty and just yourself in the vehicle. When you have it fully loaded with the family going away for the weekend, or when you are towing a heavy trailer or caravan.

I am not suggesting that you go through the measuring thing every time you do the car or that you have a 100 different tyre pressure for each slight change of load. But I basically have them for the 3 situations listed above.

Default BF 245/70/16 a/t

Thanks for the info...spent some time on the web and the UK BF site talks about Theoretical radius under load - 341mm for that tire.Would you use that pressure for all four tires?

Found the following formula on web:
Ideal pressure = vechile mass/maximum load potential x full load pressure
This pressure can be offset for front and rear.

Do like your idea more.

If I am not mistaken, that is a 10 ply rated tire and will ride real stiff if you air it too high.
I would suggest 35#'s in the front and 40#'s in the rear and work from there. You may want to adjust that upwards per the weight you carry.

This is exactly the rule I follow... But then again, I am usually hauling 3 kids and all their crap around, plus me and the wife...

When we tow our trailer, I bump the pressure up by 5psi in both front and rear...

Mike is also right about the stiffness if you're not at/near capacity - you feel everything...

Just my experience, not gospel...

The ideal way is to check your tread pattern on the ground, ideally on tarmac, and see that it is even all the way across.
