Hi, I'm new to the site - have a 2001 Discovery Series II - currently running Goodyear 255/55 R18 tires Wrangler HP. I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada - we have fierce winters - temperature ranges from high of plus 95 degrees F in summer to minus 45 degrees F in winter...lots of snow and ice from November to April. I don't do real offroad driving - several times a year we head into the bush north of Winnipeg for camping, fishing and hunting travelling on gravel or rocky roads.
There are times I feel like I'm riding on two toboggans when driving on ice, snow or sand on snow/ice...any suggestions on the type of tires for this vehicle? Sure appreciate any advice I can get. Richard |

Richard,
I'm in Saskatoon and have a 2002 DII, went from the GY to Michelin Latitude Tour HP. They've been great this winter and no sliding around. The Michelins are realy a street tire and aren't made for serious off-road but they seem to work well on the streets in all conditions and I've had no problems on gravel roads either. I got a set of winter tires for the car and it made a huge difference this winter, I've seen this size in winter tire and am even thinking of doing the same on the Disco; just not sure I want to spend the $ on a second set, $1,700 for the Michelins was enough to gag on. That's my two cents for what it's worth but hope it helps. Trent |

Thanks for the comments...I went on the Goodyear site and the recommended tire was the Fortera triple tread...I did get them installed last week...$1,200 on a 4 for 3 sale in Winnipeg at Fountain Tires. Very different ride and feel to the road. Thanks for your comments.

Man you folks spend alot of dough on rubber. I cant say I've ever spent more than $900 for a set of 4 tires for anything.
I was quoted $1062 for 5 BFG Mud Terrains (in the 16" Rim flavour, however). |

if you are going to spend most of your time on-road and in the snow, getting a dedicated winter tire would be your best bet for traction. I think the hankook icebear comes in a 255/55-18 I run those (although not that size of course) on my audi in the winter and they are great - good traction on the street in the dry and in the snow. inexpensive too. not sure how they would do off road.

You can usually get good treadwear from wintertires in the summer. Problem with our trucks is they weigh 2 tons. That puts ALOT more wear on winter tires in the summer.
I would recommend nothing less than a Blizzack if your looking for a winter rubber. Bit pricey but f-me do they work. |

I put Michelen X-Ice on the car this winter, on ice it was as good if not better than the LR. I'll check out the Hancooks for winter, if I do decide to go with a dedicated winter I think I would just go with a 16' (probablly easier to find and cheaper). I normally go to the Tire Rack and have them shipped, with the CDN dollar the way it is normally it beats the tire shops hands down even after I get them onto a rim.
