I love my BFG AT's.. They have been great..... However from what I understand mud is an issue out there, and the BFG at's don't clear out as well as others...

My parents have Nitto Terra Grapplers and they have been great so far... They are also cheaper than BFG at's!!!

seems you're in VA, go with BFG MTs instead.

If you are likly to off road I'd go for a nice mud terrain. If you are more a tarmac driver then I'd look at a road biased all terrain.

The BFG A/T looks good but is pretty pathetic on wet pavement. Plus if you get it into the mud it just isn't agressive enough.

Depending on use it's either the best of, or the worst of both worlds.

If you are preparred to trim the front bumper you could go up in size as well.

A 31.10.50 should fit fine on stock ride height with trimmed bumper corners. Either that or drop down to a 235 section.

Not sure about current prices, but I would recommend Interco's TrXus for VA/WV terrain. In the size you're looking at, they should be in your price range. They come siped, which helps on winter roads, and will work very well in the mud we get out here. They have performed well for me on rocks too.

I have been very happy w/ this tire. Some notes, however:
1. As you may have heard, they take a lot of weight to balance
2. They won't ride like A/Ts
3. The sidewalls are VERY thick. They don't give much. I wouldn't air these down much in mud. I stopped airing down entirely unless I'm on rock.

Alternatively, in that price range, you could look at some retreads. I buddy of mine has run retreads for a year now with no issues. I forget the company name-- is it Hi-Tech Retreads? Or something like that?

And, of course, BFG makes excellent tires. I'm a huge fan of their ATs but as pointed out- they suck in mud. The MTs are great, and ride great on the street. Finally, you could look at ProComp. I'm not a big fan of their MTs vs. the competition, but if you mostly drive on the street they are fine. Also, you can usually find a 'buy 3 get 1 free' deal thru 4WheelParts.

You haven't seen a big difference in mud? I usually air them down, but one example was at MAR... first night there I didn't air down (was too tired from the drive).. so I was running ~35/40 and was not getting any good traction.. next morning I aired down to about 17 and it made a big difference.

Airing down helps, no doubt. But less so in mud than on rocks. But what I found w/ the TrXus are that the sidewalls are so damn thick that they don't flex,,, especially not like a BFG which is a very conforming sidewall. So as mud backs into the bead, the fact that you're at lower pressure w/ little sidewall conformation put stress on the bead and can break it even at moderate pressures. That's what happened to me at MAR when I busted 2 beads at the same trail at the same spot.

I still air down at Crozet, but there I don't have the mud pushing into the beat or the impact of sidewall against mud-rut. I ran the Pearl's Pond trails this past weekend at 30 psi no problem.

BTW: DiscoveryChannel: I priced out TrXus in your size at $119 thru National Tire & Wheel in WV. They do a big mail-order business and I've ordered from them several times w/ no problems.

If its gonna be a pavement pounder, then look at the Dunlop Radial Rover A/T. Had a set of them on our Disco (sold said truck with those tires on it). On road they rode excellent and were quiet. They performed very well on in the snow and ice. Look at prices as well, quite inexpensive from what I remember.

Off road, as long as you don't do mud, they perform alright. When you look at the tread, its mainly a road tire which sounds like what you need. Also they offer the A/T in the stock tire size. No reason to install larger tires if you are on a budget.

The next step up would be the Dunlop R/T. Supposidly more of a snow-biased tire. Performs a wee bit better off road. They don't seem to be too loud. Quieter than BFG A/Ts but not the whisper of the tire mentioned above.

Those tires look awesome!! I was checking them out this weekend while I was getting an alignment done! I scored some GDYR, MTR's basicaly for free, but If I was buying new ones, I would go with them!!! They are sold as firestone Destination M/T's in other contries....I think!
