Default Wheels effect on offroading?

If I were to put 20" rims on a 2000 Range Rover would the off roading capabilities be screwed with because of the smaller tires.

Yes, some what. The problem is with a bigger wheel you have a smaller, more exposed side wall that will leave the tires open for having rocks rip holes in them. You have even more issues if you tried to air down, which with that sort of tire is nearly impossible.

If 20" rims are loosing popularity in NYC due to pot holes destroying them, it's a safe bet they wouldn't fare well off-road.

Yes, and one hour into your fun your rims are trashed and you are crying on the side of the trail...Get a second set of off-the road tires/rims it can be done cheap.

Mainly depends how small of a tire you put on. If you put a huge profile offroad tire on, no. You will probable need more lift and some cutting to clear it.

you could put some 37" tires that fit 20" wheels on there, of course you'll need a bunch of lift and some cutting to clear them...
