Default Which would be better? 235/85/16 or......

I have a 1.5 inch lift on my Disco, and I currently run 255/70/16 on it. No rubbing, no real problems, but....... She is a little squirrly at highway speeds, and also kinda bouncy. So it is time to replace tires, and I am wondering what would be the best size. 235/85/16, 245/75/16, 235/75/16, 245/70/16

I want to run BFG

Please give your .02

x2 on 265/75-16s.....they fit. More surface area will mean more grip on rocks, etc.....better for mud too....

...I believe they are 1.19in wider than 235/85-16

I don't have a D1, I have an RRC, but I have to say that most other sites seem to suggest that on a D1 you'll have to do some trimming to run 265/75R16s, even with a mild lift.

I run 245/75R16, and they work well, but I have different sheet metal than you. 235/85R16 will give you some extra clearance under the diff, and they are very slightly narrower, which helps clearance.

You didn't indicate what the balance for this truck is, or whether it has to also be a daily driver. Keep in mind that BFGs tend to run large for their size, and especially BFG ATs have wide, square tread which can rub where other tires clear.

Your 1.5" lift will help, and that you can run 255/70R16 with no rubbing now is a good sign, but I still doubt that you can get 265/75R16 without some trimming at least in the rear fender.

The 265/75 is about 1mm shorter than the 235/85... if that. It is 30 mm wider than the 235. Just break those numbers down and you can see it in real terms... I dont think you would have trouble with fitting that tire at all.

On the other hand, I do have a 2 inch lift with 235/85 and I still rubbed very very little at the rear fender. That was a simple fix... one good bump and it never rubbed again.

It you put a tire with the 30 mm wider, okay actually 15 mm wider to the outside you might still rub just a little but you can certainly fit that problem without cutting.

Keep in mind these rovers do have there little quirks and some may not rub at all and some will rub more than others.

I personally would really like to have 26/75s now that I have seen how well the taller tire (235/85) fit. A little fill in of those fenders would look pretty good. Just an opinion!

I have a D1 with 2" RTE HD springs which is closer to 3" and i run 265/75/16 MT's and had some rubbing(while teatering between wheels fully flexed crossways) before I trimmed.

How did you adjust the bumpstops, if I'm thinking of those rubber triangles above the axles on the frame?

Well, thanks people, but.... I do use this as a daily driver. I want something that is going to be great in ALL conditions. I live in a humid enviroment. South East Texas. I do however go on many trips with this. Big Bend, Colorado, and everywhere in between. No heavy offroading as of yet. That is why I like the BFG. I have also looked at REVO's I like them alot, and have heard many good things. I really don't want to go bigger than 255/70/16. She bounces too much already. I do run 35psi. They will cup/wear if I don't. I really would like to go 245/70/16, but those are so hard to find. I have entertained 265/70/16. More tires to choose from, but I think that would be too big with only a 1.5 lift. Gas milage is a real bugger of mine! I get 14/15 city and 17/19 on highway. I don't want to get less milage by going with too big a tire.

you say it bounces too much. thats probably more your shocks than it is your tires. if you dont wanna go bigger than 255/70/16, just get that or a 245/75/16. theyre about the same size.

you should be happy with 14-19 mpg. that is great gas mileage for a rover! i wish i can get that. im only getting 11-15 mpg.

He meant steering stops. You won't ever touch your bumpstops with OME springs because they don't flex enough.

Before you replace the tires, deal with the problem, the squirrly thing. Tires could cause this problem if you have one with a snake belt, but with Rovers, chances are you have a warn part, bushing, preload and/or alignment. Also deal with the bouncy problem, shocks if over 50K, and or springs.
Once you got this resolved, go crazy with tires.
Good luck,
Mike
