Default FYI for Colo folks. Carnage Boulder closing

It is official. Carnage Canyon in Boulder will be closed to all future OHV use (that means 4WD, ATV, UTV, and bike) effective September 17, 2008. The Forest Service will be putting up post and cable to block off the trail. We are awaiting word on the opening of the alternate route...
Restoration will begin on September 20 on Carnage. It will be a 4 stage restoration process.

PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE CARNAGE CANYON IN BOULDER AFTER SEPTEMBER 17, 2008.

If you should happen to see that the post and cable are removed please call the Boulder Ranger District immediatly and tell the front desk then leave a message for Cat Luna or Brian Rassmusen. 303-541-2500

Wildland Restoration Project is handling all the volunteer work on the rehablitation. Here is their site if you would like to help restore the area.
Wildlands Restoration Volunteers

Here is the information posted about the restoration:
Date(s): Sep 20, 2008 - Number of Volunteers: 100

Help WRV restore forest habitat and reduce severe erosion in Left Hand Canyon, impacted by years of motorized recreation. Over the past four years, Wildlands Restoration Volunteers collaborated with the Forest Service, Trail Ridge Runners, and Walsh Environmental Services, to complete the first four phases of an award-winning restoration project benefiting hundreds of acres of forest habitat and downstream water quality.

In 2008, we will build on our success by closing and restoring thousands of feet of severely eroded spur roads on lower Fireman's Hill. This begins our next exciting phase of work that will eventually restore the entire Carnage Canyon stream corridor, preventing thousands of tons of sediment each year from eroding into Left Hand Creek. Heavy equipment will prepare the site. Volunteers will seed multiple areas, apply erosion fabric and construct erosion preventing structures. End of day Celebration!

I'm suprised they allow motorized vehicles on the streets in Boulder. I guess no one is willing to bicycle in all the hemp shorts and shirts it takes to keep that place going!

They are supposed to be replacing it with a more environmentally friendly trail that will be just as if not more challenging.

Yeah that whole trail is a mess, last time we went there was a lazy patrol man watching people shoot across the road and watching folks litter and he just sat there. I guess I was never impressed with that place!
