Land Rover Secures $38 Million Grant from UK Government to Build LRX
Land Rover is now poised to bring a new entry-level crossover model to market thanks to a grant from the British government. The U.K. government has confirmed a £27 million ($37.9 million) cash infusion towards a vehicle that would be based on the Land Rover LRX Concept.
The LRX was first displayed at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit in 2008. The concept car features a 2.0-liter turbodiesel hybrid powertrain, allowing it to get 30 percent better fuel-economy over comparably-sized SUVs and crossovers.
The stylish LRX may be more compact that other Land Rover vehicles - measuring 5.9-inches less in length than the LR2/Freelancer and 8.1-inches lower in height - but it will still be a premium vehicle.
The production model would be the lightest and most fuel-efficient model Land Rover has ever produced.
I know the pressure is on to produce fuel effiecient vehicles but that looks more like a rice burner any truck I would consider. By the time you stow your sleeping bag and cook stove there's no room left for the beer or more than 1 passenger... Landrover is certainly not catering to the offroad crowd with that umm... car.

Price, of course, would be a deciding factor and what you plan to use it for. I just can't imagine seeing that car getting too far off the road down here in the swamps... OTOH it would probably make a good beach cruiser

With something like that it would be used more like my wifes ML good all year rounder for DD. Maybe some dirt roads or gravel but that would be it. It would also depend on how much gas it sucked as well in those duties.
If it's used for what it looks like it's intended it would probably be pretty good.

With a 2.0 liter diesel in that small of a car it probably gets 50mpg. The problem might be getting the diesel version to the US? For some reason they can't or won't meet the EPA standards over here.
I'll tell you one thing... if they started shipping a diesel version of the LR3 over here I would buy one in a heart beat!

What a waste of time and $. They should just figure out how to make there Defender, Disco3, & Range into a hybrid or biodiesel, and dump that idea and the LR2.

First of all the front sweep looks like a Chrysler, the whole thing looks like a cartoon punk with a white mohawk, the viewing range to all sides from the Discovery is kaput, and the wheels look extraordinarily stupid.
What chassis is that thing on? (How close to other crossovers' car/minivan crappy unibody chassis?)
At least I am glad that if Land Rover has a crossover, it is not to the Great Beyond.
I've spent a bit of time checking out this site and you are all so knowledgeable so now that I have problems, I hope you can help me too. I own a 2002 Discovery and have really loved it until now! It needed coolant a few months ago and I just thought it hadn't been filled in a while but it seems to have been a slow leak that is now turned into a steady flow from somewhere on the driver's side. I've been told that it's a head gasket and will cost no less than $1,500. This was quoted over the phone and, of course, I'm not trusting that advise. Is there anyone who could please let me know of anything else it could be before I have it towed to the mechanic?
