I would go ahead and take it to the dealer for a thorough check through. But then, NEVER bring it back to them. They'll kill your maintenance allowance on their labor rates alone. Judging on area, there are usually a couple of independant shops around that are good on Rovers. Ask any friends/family with european cars where they bring them to for work, call those places, and ask them about their experience working on Rovers. Pick the one with the cheapest price or the most experience-whichever is most important to you. That's a good looking 99. The Beluga Black is one of my personal favorite colors, and the black piping on the seats is a classy look. Good luck with it. Hopefully you pick it up. And welcome to the board.

thanks!!
i really appreciate it, and thats exactly what i plan on doing, taking it to the land rover dealership for a first check up... but then in the future taking to a rover specialist near by. Another problems a friend mentioned to me is that this particular model had problems with the suspension, but when i spoke to the auto sales owner of the place he said that the lady who previously owned it just got new suspensions ( I know I' m not up on the lingo ; ) but regardless he said it just needs a new battery and he would get it replaced for me. this is the range rovers details 1999 one previous owner -which was a lady automatic price $8,999.00 millage- 93,000 (here is more pictures of it) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...4/DSCN6985.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...4/DSCN6984.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...4/DSCN6979.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...4/DSCN6983.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...4/DSCN6970.jpg my situation is; I'm a working college student and technically this would be my first car, because I'm just using my moms Dodge Durrango for the time period. I'm used to the expensive gas of San Diego, and used to the v8 sucking up gas, but i work down the street and only drive to school 2 days a week which is about 20 miles away, so its not like I'm going to be schlupping it around everywhere, and then rarely ill be driving to go snowboarding, and to LA so the gas wont kill me too much, I'm just worried that if something goes wrong i might need to fork over 1,000 for some random problem.(that i don't have. |

Well, if the suspension was just replaced that is good. I believe the 99 is supposed to much better reliability wise than the previous models.
Its good you do not have to drive far, but I would make sure you have at least a thousand dollars set a side in case something does go wrong. I would say, go for it though. It would be cool if you got it, you will love it. Good luck.

Paris;
It's awesome that you want one, but you might want to think twice until you're out of college. It's too old of a vehicle to get an extended warranty, and issues with that model run 1500-2500 range. Unless you have receipts of the suspension replacement, I would be worried that the salesguy is playing you. If it has receipts for it, and a carfax proving it's a one owner car, then it's a nice truck for the money. If it's replaced, you're looking at somewhere around 5 years before you have to worry about it again. And at that time, you can have it replaced with a coil spring suspension. For snowboarding, it will be a great vehicle safety wise, with the right tires. And it will be a very safe vehicle for your commutes. But unless you can afford a certified preowned, or a newer model with extended warranty, you could be setting yourself up for a problem down the road. Hope you're able to get it, but buyer beware.

XM, wouldn't the dealer be able to tell if the suspension was new though?
By the way Paris, XM knows more about these vehicles than I do and I think he is giving you very good advice. Again, good luck.

You're an used car lot salersperson. Judging by the photos she posted of the lot, your company deals with a lot of newer used land rovers. In walks a gorgeous young college coed that likes and wants a Rover, but rolls in in a Durango. Your assumption is that Ms. college cutie wants the truck, but has no history with them. She's done some research on them, and asks some good questions, but you have all the Right answers to make a sale, since you've heard them before considering the amount of LR inventory on your lot. The average lifetime, it seems, of an air suspension on a P38a Range Rover is between 65 and 75 k miles. So assuming this example is an average well maintained Rangie, the "new" air suspension could be up to a third of it's lifespan old already. Hence my warning to our Ms. Paris, for Caveat Emptor. Either way, it's a nice truck. I'd just hate to see Paris jump in over her head, not be able to afford it, and then be anti-land rover because of the experience. Hell, my friends can't understand how i've put so much money in my 02' DII, but it's an addiction. Once you're in the deep end, you better already know how to swim. Daniel.

Makes sense, but what I was talking about was that I thought she said she was going to take it to the Land Rover dealer to have it checked over before purchasing it from said possibly seedy car sales place.
Funny, addiction is the correct term. In the past if I ever had to spend money on a vehicle it would piss me off, in the case of my rover, I secretly enjoy it....strange phenomenon. I even look for excuses to call my mechanic......

Aahhh, very true. If the "new" suspension was installed by a dealer, they can run the VIN, and get a full service history. And they could also look up to make sure that all service bulletins and recalls were addressed properly.

wait. no, i was wrong. thats not right. i don't think i pay that much a month. no tickets, no accidents, student discounts. i'm below that number. insurance is such a bitch, you need it so bad, costs so much, but if shit goes south its worth it to have a good policy. If it wasn't for insurance I know i would have bought at least 1 project car on the side...
you got a clear driving record?
