Okay, I have finally moved to the "dark side" as I have heard it called.
I am a first time LR owner, 1995 Disco I, and am looking forward to getting into the lifestyle. A little about me: I am an EOD Tech for the United States Navy and am a current Aircooled Porsche/VW person. The Disco is my first non-Porsche/VW that I have owned. My brother in law took me out off-roading in his 1997 SE7 and I was hooked!
I currently own:
1956 356B Steel Sunroof (Finally Restored!)
1967 Convertible Type I in show condition
1968 911, um, parts car?
1970 Pro Street Type I (322bhp, 9.56 1/4@135.1)
and my mistress 1987 930 (849bhp/770wrhp, best run so far has been 11.03 because I just can not get the real tires to stick)
the only thing on my 930 that is stock is probably the shell itself!
I have never done anything with a 4X4 before, but I have a ton of custom engine, turbo, suspension and body work. I also have quite a few items that I make myself that the turbo diesel guys may be interested in!
That is pretty much it. I am looking to turn this Disco into a sweet off-road rig for camping and the snow so I plan to glean as much from you guys as possible!

Right now, I am at NS Mayport. However, I am getting ready to move to Panama City in the Pan Handle, pretty close to PCOLA actually. It would be awesome to be around other Rover people! In this part of Florida, if you do not have a Chevy with a Diesel, you just suck...

ArmyRover - does that mean you are still in the Army?
I will put up some pics of my vehicles pretty soon. The 930 truly is an awesome machine. I wish I had it when I was single. It turns women into mush whenever they are around it! Oh, better yet, I wish I had it in highschool!!!! Yeah, that would have kicked some serious a$$.
I am hoping to put some of my performance experience into the Rover. It seems like a decent platform to start from.

As far as performance in a rover if you mean off road there is much to be done. If you meant performance in making them faster you can do all you want to this motor and it will never be a fast machine unless you count the gas gauge heading south.

NavyEOD; welcome to the insanity. Congrats on the 930. I am assuming considering the year, and 930 designation, you have one of the grey market beasties. My dream car. In college I worked for 2 1/2 years at the Werkshop in West Melbourne, as a Porsche tech. I lost track of how many PCA and POC 930's we built. In house engine work, RUF kits, Porsche Werks 1 kits, and Porsche Design body kits, when the dealers were the only place to get them. I still have my PCA/SCCA car in outside storage, steadily rusting away. It's a 75 914-2.0 that I built when I worked for Porsche. 911 rear suspension and brakes, 911 Carrera front suspension with 930 brakes, and 928s wheels. Along with a custom cage we built inhouse, IMSA legal, that I designed, got type approved, and installed. Good to have another Porschephile on board.
You'll love the Disco, they are amazing trucks. The DI's have a great amount of available mods available to them, and lots of great advice here as well as other sites. Once again, welcome.
BTW, my factory is only a couple of miles from the SEAl museum on North Hutchinson Island, you need to visit that place before you hit the panhandle.

Damn right another squid!!!!!!!! Y'know, we hunt in packs...like slimy, 8 armed wolves. Don't forget that.
Anyway, XtremeMarine - Awesome! Someone besides me who knows something about Porsches! I was begining o think I might be alone in the world!
Yeah, I have heard the term "grey area" attached to it before. I have a HotVWs from, like, 1985 that says they stopped making 930s in '79 and that '86 was going to be the triumphant return of the Turbo 911. The title says 930, I have the original bill of sale from Porsche to my dad's brother. I have spent 4 years and a ridiculous amount of money on it. It is pretty much the baddest thing going around here. Of course, that is not actually saying that much...
Did you SCCA for long? I have always wanted to do it, but I just do not have enough time in between deployments.
Oh, and I am already having to work on the DI!!!! Water pump went out this morning and the serp. broke! Crazyness...at least the parts are cheap!

Only us Porschephiles are known for calling landy parts cheap. lol.
Yeah, I did SCCA for over half a decade. Solo I, Solo II, ProSolo, Club Racing, SCCA Rally, PCA Club racing, BMWCCA Club racing, and one season in IMSA. Started off in the winged warriors, (mini-sprints), then went to rallye racing for two years. Once I got into road racing, I was hooked. But when I got into the real world, and had bills to pay, there went the road racing habit.

So, what do you do for the army? I blown stuff up and get shot at for the Navy, it is pretty sweet. I spent waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy to long on SEAL 2 with all those newbie "bad-asses" and I have finally rotated back to the states. Once I serve my purpose here (making coffee) I'll be headed back out to the desert.
When you mention the off-road options, I am a little taken aback by that. The is just SO much info here. Is there a single location to go to that lists the most common or popular mods? Some kind of starting place? The shear weight of info that is in place here is staggering. Everyone seems to know so much about this already.

SEAL 2, huh? A west coaster. I spent some time in cross training at little creek when I was still a reservist, but you guys have way too many wires loose for me. LMAO.

I bugged ArmyRover about it, but what about you? What did (do) you do for the Marines?
And I noticed your Avatar is a Disco doing a pretty serious move, what types of mods do you have done to it? I have no idea where to start with a 4X4. My first instinct is to go through the drive train. And this thing is coil springs all the way around, how do you lift it up for bigger tires? Can you body lift it like a Jeep? What about the suspension, how do you change the height there? It seems like you would need to change a lot od parts to modify the spring height.

I was a Coastie. (Shut Up OkieRover!!!) Reserves and Auxiliary. In the Reserves I was AST primary, CounterNarcotics secondary. One of a handful of Reservists on Atlantic Strike Force. One of the USCG special forces teams, (only 2). In the Auxiliary, I did inspections for individual and commercial vessels. And helped to run the Basic Seamanship courses the Auxiliary teaches.
My Rover is just cresting a hilltop in that photo. He, Tonka, is on two wheels coming down to all four. At one point he was on one for a second. I have a 2 inch lift from Rovertym Engineering, OME shocks and steering stabilizer. RTE weld on differential guards. RTE offset spare tire carrier. 32" YokoHama Mud Terrains on stock wheels. XMI front winch tray with Warn 12,000 winch. Front and rear recovery shackles. CB radio with firestik antenna. VHF radio. RTE extended s.s. brake lines. RTE 1" spring spacers. Great Basin Rovers rebuilt HD front driveshaft with greasable u-joints. A detroit trutrac limited slip in the front diff. A 4.6 range rover motor replaced the 4.0. A range rover tranny rebuilt for off-roading. A LT230 transfer case with lockable center diff. And on order are the new RTE rear lower shock mounts and retainers for DII's. Also for lighting I have 2 Hella Hydrolux on the front brushbar which are waterproof and powdercoated to match the truck. 4 Hella's on the light bar, 1 Hella on each side for working, and 1 Hella on the rear for a worklight. Plus, probably more that I have forgotten.
The truck is a Kalahari package built by Land Rover Special Vehicles. 350 built, only 150 in the Borrego Yellow. It came from the factory with brushbar, 2 Hella lights, and SafariGard rock sliders. Plus custom powdercoated 16" alloys, and the special paint.
