Thumbs up Story to share! 1989 RR Classic! Opinions please!

I got this rundown RR as a gift because the previous owner want to sell it but need some computer work and I know a little bit about computer sice I have been around them for 15 years .

This friend gave me the keys and said have fun and I hope you enjoy it. I never have seen this RR and didn't know what to except other then it was parked for 5 years and no-even started it.

So I went to look at it and bring it home witha little bit of a fight! Battery was removed and all the fluids were emptyed before it was parked which from what I understand it the reason it is still running today partically .

I went to the local part store bought all the fluids and went to work. After I was done I had AAA bring me a battery and some fuel and guess what it started then I shut it off and towed it home . At this point I was very excited and was waiting to get started.

Here is what I found out.

Shocks were dry and completely leaked out all the fluid. Springs were done and need to be replaced, spark plugs and wires and rotors fuel filter and a complete oil change with a K&N filter. Finally the tires were rotten and had to be replaced. $2000 Later the beast was alive and now here come the can of worms and I was afraid of.

Interior is great and in almost perfect condition except the seat switches are dead and the window switches and sun roof switches are not working right. Had a really nice stereo and amplifiers installed and got that all cleaned up and up and running after changing out all the fuses.

I had to get the windows tinted and new speedo since the one on the RR was dead for some reason.

Well now my gearbox is leaking and my oil light sometimes flashes when I push the brakes. I have no reason why...

I was driving around and all of a sudden the brakes went out and had to tow my baby home again! New master cyclinder and pump with new brake pads and cross-drilled brake rotors from brembo! Now stops on a dime.

So this is where I am today and looking at my money pit and a work in progress and I hope someday I will meet up with some local people in Socal area and do some off roading!

Lets hope something else doesn't break before that accually happens.

I will post some pictures once I get some but I just wanted to share my first experince with my very own 1989 RR

I'm looking forward to hearing back from alot of you and feel free to send me some messages if you like.

I'm looking forward to being apart of the forum and as a moderate and owner of a another forum I will be a active member look for answers.

I just wish I was just a little bit more of a grease monkey instead of a polisher!

WOW!! A great deal gone bad. I am, glad you are sticking to it, I bet the Rover gods smile upon you! For seat switchs you can save money and go with the W126 mercedes switch. Looking foward to what else you do!

Happy to hear that you're sticking with it. But sadly , since you want to go off-roading, a lot of your fixes will have to be redone. Shocks are not bad, but you could have gone with RTE or OME springs, to get a 1.5 to 2" lift. Also, since you needed new tires already, you could have gone with 245/75, or 235/85 tires and been ready to go. Keep up with it, and she'll be good to you. Enjoy the truck.
