I went all winter once without a starter. What I did was pump the throttle a little, turn the engine over and over, turn the key on, then pull up. Started first pull usually.

I've not had much luck with my handcrank. My wife thought it was a classic "Dave Series Moment" though. I think she even caught me banging the crap out of my hands on video. Needless to say I've not tried it since. I think my Series gave me a complex after that and I've since left the handcrank in the tub

I usually hand crank it at least once a month as I can usually tell how the timing/engine is running by how it hand cranks. If it bucks and kicks on the hand crank, then I know that there is something a little wonky and time to do a quick tune up. That and it keeps me in good practice for the day when the starter is full of mud from that one last off road run that we decide to do on the weekend......

Yea.. mine came with a crank.. its pretty amazing that something that old can pop over that easily.

Heck.. my battery BARELY can push past compression and it still starts every time.
Speaking of which.. need to buy a new battery and alternator.

My starter solenoid died on one of my 109 6cyl's one winter in Vermont. I started it with the hand crank for about a week. Luckily my Koenig winch didn't block access.
