Default Chance to buy

Hi to all, I have a chance to buy the attached 1967 Land Rover. I own 2 Discoveries (94 and 97) and would love to buy this one. They want 18K for it and it has 50,000 miles on it. I could use any comments from this group, as I know little about this type of Rover. I wrench my other Rovers, and am not afraid of this one. Please comment on any aspect of the truck that you think is pertinent. thanks

Phil, thats a pretty sharp looking 88". 18k seems a bit high for an 88 though. Unless it has something really special about it or is an A+ restoration, I'd say it is too high. 18k is getting into 100% restored 109" price territory. Bolting on a bunch of mods to a standard 88" doesn't make it's value double. I'm nto saying thats the case with this truck but it has a lot of bolt on's. Check out Landroverexchange.com to get a rough idea of what these trucks sell for. If you can do standard maintenance jobs on a Disco, you can most certainly do almost everything to a series truck. There couldn't be a simpler vehicle out there to work on. Getting back to the 88" you posted, it looks to be in really nice shape, but we'd have to know more about it to estimate it's value. Chassis/drivetrain/bulkhead condition are the big items to check on Series trucks.

I have to agree with my son. That is a very high price for that truck. Anyone who would paint (non LR color to boot)the galvanized windshield frame and body cappings probably has taken other shortcuts and oversights. I have the advantage of having had MANY series trucks in the past, and present, and have a pretty good idea what they need and should look like when done, and what they should fetch. While I have no objections to RHD, they generally reduce the value by up to half.
Some say I sold my last 2A for too little, but I got just under $11k for a totally rebuilt truck with everything new. Keep looking, there are plenty of better ones out there for way less money. Did you miss the perfect red one on Ebay about 6 weeks ago that went for $10K?

I agree with the above. The painted galvanized windshield frame and body cappings should be your first red flag. At $18k, that truck should be totally restored and sitting on a galvanized frame, OD, rebuilt or new trans/transfer and motor, new suspension, complete & working interior. With 50k on the clock, that doesn't sound like it is the case. Not a fan of the color, but nice truck, just not worth 18k from what I see. Lots of nice trucks out there, I am sure you will find one, or get this one, just for less. Good luck.

I just noticed the Land Rover sign in the upper right picture. Is it a dealership selling it? That would surely explain the high price.
There is an early 2A at the LR dealership close to me,priced at $16K and the sales manager essentially said he didn't want it to sell simply since they looked at it as an attention getter, but if some fool wanted it badly enough to pay that, they'd be happy to take his money and get another one. He told me they do about one a year and use the profits to pay for their company Christmas party.

gorgeous rig but way to much money to me. Of course a 10 year old ford ranger is out of my price range right now lol.

Seriously it seems to be way to high of a price for that rig.

thanks to all who responded, that is just what I needed to hear. I drove it, my first right hand drive, and was caught up in the "frenzy" that comes with driving a classic like this. they say with the overdrive it can do up to 70 on the interstate, but the interior is a tad bit ratty, and one of my friends who is a LR mechanic, said to pass on it also. Again, I cannot tell you how much i appreciate this community, and all the fine Rover folks that contribute to this forum. My search continues.......

No Gary, I don't hate it when my son is right, unless, of coarse we can't agree on something I have had more experience with then he has. It's kind of like a reward, as a parent, when we agree, since it gives me some sort of reinforcement that I had some influence of his growing up.

Taskforce, if you're really bitten, it won't take forever to find what you want. There are plenty of good examples out there, and it's best if you look at as many as possible. Don't invest alot of your cash in someone elses work unless you're all thumbs, and it's a truck done right. There are an awful lot of awfull trucks out there. Be selective and you'll be happier than jumping at the first seemingly good one that comes along.

50k my arse!!! I really really really doubt milage is anywhere near genuine that makes an average annual of 1600 miles, more like 250k or 350k even an A1 rebuild cant replace all working parts, also why would anyone fit d90 doors to a 2a i would be carefull on this one it is what it is but I doubt its worth anywhere near what they are asking

ONSLOW, you are so right (never doubted it for a moment), when they told me about the mileage and that the doors were from a D90, I wasn't sure why, but my "spidey-senses" said I had better go to the experts (that would be you'all) and get the straight skinny. thanks for your comments, and I really would like to have a Series II, but will continue my search. British Columbia seems to have quite a few nice older Rovers for sale. I smell road trip.....
