MISSING THE HELL OUT OF SEATTLE
|
Hey guy's I got a question. When I pull away from a dead stop at times in relation to throttle and clutch I am getting a shaking and clunking noise from the rear end. Diff??? I have been underneath the truck and gave the drive line a good shake..nothing.U joints look good nothing there. I have noticed that the rear diff pan is leaking in the mid section from corrosion. If it leaks below a certain point will that cause damage to the diff???Nothing seems loose. Any Ideas????????????

How long have you had your Series? Is it a new sound?
The reason I ask is that mine has a similar sound -- not from the rear end though. It's been there from the beginning (well... since I bought it a month ago). I was figuring that it was due to the clutch engaging quickly/harshly. It doesn't happen every time but sounds a little scary when it does. Wrote it off as a Rover quirk. Let me know what you find out. |

How loud and how violent? I had something like that once about 800 miles from home. Turns out it was a broken carrier in the differential. It would only happen under load which included turning (especially turning). I removed the rear drive shaft and drove with front wheels only till I got home and sorted it.

If it is the diff you will need around 50 quid for a s/hand diff and around 150 quid to get it fitted |

I have seen collapsed input bearings on these axles but other than that they are bomb proof. If it some kind of diff failure which I am 99.9% it aint then its a new/s2nd hand back axle as the solly diff needs special tools to get it out and nobody will touch them cheaper to fit a replacement axle 100 for the axle 200 to fit one |

check.... drive flanges for wear (mine currently clunk due to worn drive flanges), also your spring bushings might be worn, causing a clunk. Your splines on the drive shaft as well (make sure you pull the shaft off to check this properly... rtm). Also if you put the rear end up on jack stands and turn the drive shaft, you might be able to pinpoint to the noise, you might have to jerk it back and forth....

also did you check your u-joints with the hand brake on or off? The shaking might just be your clutch plates jittering?
