That is seriously ugly, but underneath that is quite a good idea- that's actually a Santana Ligero (Ligero= 'Lightweight' in Spanish), and was one of Santana's excellent ideas that Land Rover never took up.
Santana gave the 1/2 ton 88 Lightweight the 'controversial' bodypanels, stuck a SIII plastic grille on the front, put 2-leaf parabolic springs on it, and fitted some comfy seats and sold it as a glorified beach buggy, rather like the Suzuki SJ. The Ligero was available with 2.25-litre 4-cyl petrol, and when it wasn't being messed up like that monstrosity, looked like this: ![]()
