Default engine noises....

Ok. I know everyone is gonna groan when the read the title, as engine noises are about the worst thing to diagnose over the web....

2.25 pertol engine, rebuilt 1.5 years ago..... So the noise that I thought was coming from the transfer case is actually in the engine. When I am coasting in town at around 50km's there is a pronounced rattle. It is very periodic (although lately more so, but since doing an oil change, it seems to be happening less ), never happens when under load, cold, or when engine braking, just when you are coasting along maintaining speed in the city, and it never happens at higher speeds..... it seems to happen when the engine is around 2000 rpms (usually in fourth, in the city.) Never seems to happen when the engine is cold, only when it is warm after a longer drive. Going out of the city it never happens but when you slow down to the next town, it is there. When it is happening, if you put the clutch in and let the engine slow down it stops, also when you accelerate, it stops very shortly after. When the noise does stop, it does not wind down, but rather stops suddenly.

So my thinking... I wonder if it is oil pressure sensitive (I think I remember that there is a ball that regulates pressure ) Could that be worn and rattling in it's pathway. The other thought was the timing chain hitting the front cover, but it seems the noise when you are driving sounds lower and to the oil filter side of the engine.... Any thoughts.

I think you may be right. It could be a slack chain, or chain tensioner. But, as you said, noises are tough to describe from a description.

This is the noise that I heard from my truck then the engine blew. I am taking apart the front of the engine now to see whats going on in there. I think its the timing chain.
