Default fairey overdrive noise.. what's normal

I engaged my fairey overdrive for the first time today, trying to keep up with traffic. (unsuccessful

It sounded pretty loud.. darn geary... lot of noise..

Since I read that people like them to REDUCE noise.. I was wondering it that was ok.

I haven't checked the fluid.

It definitely did what it was supposed to. dropped my rpms tons..
But with a slipping clutch.. and the grinding.. it wasn't worth it. I just got off the highway..

They do make a good bit of gear whine. Keep it topped off and use some lucas oil treatment (up to half) to quiet it a bit.

Better get used to checking the oil regularly. The more they wear, the noisier they get, especially if they run low on oil.

Should be a dipstick on the side, although I'd overfill it just a little bit myself.

Get used to checking ALL fluids, more often than regularly. That seems to be the norm with Series trucks.

Well, I'd think there must be a dipstick on the hex bolt then, otherwise there is no way to tell how much oil it should have unless it has a fill level bolt in the side.

If there is not a dipstick on the hex then someone lost the original, call RDS for a replacement if you need it.

hmm I have most of those.. I got the manual for the overdrive from rovers down south and the repair manual from that south african sight in "handy links" thread.
One thing I would love is an owners manual..
