Goofing off in the great white north.
|
I finally got a series rover after months of searching for the right one. I bought a 1980 Stage 1 V8 109 safari wagon. Since I am currently deployed, I haven't actually seen it yet, but have gotton descriptions from people I know who have looked it over. That being said, what are the differences between a Stage 1 and a regular 109, besides the V8, LT95 and front body? Any other differences? I've only ever seen one other like it and that was years ago. I'm counting the days until my deployment ends so I can pick up my new toy and finally have some fun.

Differences? Let's see...how about its very hard to find and may even be considered a sought after collectible LR. After all, it is the prelude to what we now know as the Defender. How's that?? Good job man!

The main differences apart from those you mentioned are the axles the Stage 1 has 3.54:1 diff ratios as opposed to 4.7:1 of other series vehicles it also has constant velocity joints instead of hardy spicer UJs,also the front propshaft has 3 Ujs not the normal 2,The V8 in the stage 1 had restrictors fitted in the inlet manifold to reduce performance these can easily be removed if they havent already most have been.
Brakes are taken from the 2.6 model and were the largest fitted to series vehicles, You should look for any spares on ebay or elsewhere especially CV joints and a front propshaft as these are getting hard to find and expensive so grab them if you can. |

Nice catch- Some of the little bits are kinda rare, but for the most part you'll be able to get whatever you need. The Stage 1 V8 is much better than the NAS 6 for those who just have to have something bigger than the 4cyl.
