Hello I am new to the landy thing and have a series111 lightweight, when starting it just gives a whining sound with no turnover of the engine. If I push start the car it starts first time no problem.
If I leave the car in gear and crank the starter it again just gives a whining sound and does not 'jump' from being in gear. I am guessing that it is the starter??? Can anyone confirm this? If it is the starter can I remove the starter and 're-condition' it myself, and if so what do I need to do??? Ok I need loads of help - many thanks to any helpers! |

Guessing that if you pull the starter, you are going to find that the gear is not sliding properly on the shaft... (weak bendix spring, or bendix spring that is completely seized in oil/mud/junk..) I am assuming that the whining you hear is the started spining.
When you say you push the car, are you talking about bump starting where you push the car, hop in, pop the clutch to start it... or rocking it back and forth in gear......

It certainly sounds like the bendix gear on the end of the starter armature is not moving out to engage the ring gear. This is often caused by oil, from a leaky rear main seal, getting onto the starter shaft. The oil then attracys dirt, forms a thick grimmy paste and won't let the bendix move freely on the shaft.
You can try taking the starter out, and thoroughly flushing it with carb cleaner or brake cleaner. If the rear main seal is leaking enough, it will eventually need the remove/clean procedure again. |
