Default Help for timing settings on a 2.5

hi all

Can anyone give me the points gap and the timing settings on a 2.5 that is fitted in S3. I know the 2.25 setting, but presume the 2.5 is not the same. I have the original 2.25 dizzy fitted to this engine and the 2.25 carb is this ok. I ask as I am having starting problems when hot and want to go over the basics.

Thanks

Point settings are usually always the same, so the 2.25 setting on that should be fine. As for the timing setting.... there is a trick you can use.. (works well for older engines too when the timing chain may not be as tight as it used to be, or when the whole engine gets tired, and does not like the other methid...)...
Step one, start the engine, allow it to warm up while driving to the steepest hill in the area that does not have a lot of traffic on it. Then loosen the bolt on the distributor and work it back and forth till the max rpms is reached, tighten bolt. Drive up the hill, loadign the engine, listen for any piston knock. Keep adjusting the distributor (in a 2,25's case) counterclockwise, till the knock just dissapears going up the hill (ie about a dgree at a time initionally, then by 1/3 dgree once you are close.) Once the piston knock is gone, it will be at the right setting for that engine. (I know that there will be some debate on this method, but I believe it is the better method than using a timing mark on an engine, it sets it up for the grade of gas, and they are not all equal, and as well sets it up elevation.)

Hope it helps....

Here is a good site that explains it well, as well as the other timing methods....

If you have not taken the time to go through some of the tricks on that site, you might want to...
